Cheeks, are supposed to be give me that healthy look, oh i forgot one of my, age spots never mind going

back i gotta get the a spot there i hate that a spot, okay, now i can put on my, blush and

You, don't want to do that i mean it feels so good - oh?

You know if you don't want to carry that you purse

You can just use the other end of your brush and just go like this and

get those edges

That's gonna give you your good look

use the blush part as your lipstick - and i'm gonna, use the lighter one for that i

Eyes shadow and i just take the brush and i always have to buy, eyebrow

Ratio Math Content Video - Stenerson - Duration: 5:01.

Today we're going to go over ratios. The standard that we're going to go over is going to show up on your screen now.

Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Examples: by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios,

tape diagrams, double number line diagrams or equations.

Let's first go over what a ratio is. A ratio is a comparison of two numbers. For example,

we might compare the number of boys to the number of girls in your class.

Let's say your class has 20 students in it:

7 of the students are boys and 13 of the students are girls.

A ratio for this situation would be

7:13

7 over 13 or 7 boys to 13 girls

Although ratios and fractions are closely related, it is important to not get them confused. In our recent example

we said that the ratio of boys to girls in our class

could be represented by 7 over 13.

This means that 7 is being compared to 13, not that it is 7 out of 13.

Both 7 and 13 are parts of the whole, which in our case is 20 students.

If we were asked to find the ratio of boys to our whole class,

we could then represent this as 7:20

7 over 20 or 7 boys to 20 students in our class.

Ratios are used in the real world all the time. One place that they are used is baking.

Let's say that you were given a recipe that asks you to use 1 cup of sugar and 2 cups of flour

because you're having some friends over to your house for a party.

But, you just realized that a lot more people are coming than you expected

so you'll need to make more of this recipe to make sure everyone is fed. You decide to increase the sugar to 3 cups.

How many cups of flour will you need to be sure you are still following the recipe?

Some of you might think that because you added two cups of sugar

to the recipe that you should add two cups of flour to balance it out.

However, if you did this you would end up with some yucky treats. We need to be sure that the ratio is balanced.

Let's look at this and see if the ratio stayed the same.

For every one cup of sugar we should have two cups of flour to make sure that our original ratio stays the same.

Let's group our ingredients together to see if that is true.

One cup to two cups.

One cup to two cups. Uh oh.

We don't have enough flour for this extra cup of sugar.

Looks like we need to add two more cups of flour to make sure that our food tastes like it's supposed to do.

We now have three cups of sugar and six cups of flour.

We can check this ratio just like we did before to make sure that it is the same as the original.

This is by simplifying the ratios.

One cup to two cups.

One cup to two cups.

One cup to two cups.

Perfect. We were able to keep the ratios equal,

meaning that our recipe will turn out perfectly.

Let's go back to the original question to see how we got here.

We were given one cup of sugar and two cups of flour to start with and we tripled, or multiplied one side by three.

To be sure that the ratio stays the same,

we have to multiply the other side of the ratio by three as well to make sure that it's balanced out.

Let's try one more example of how ratios can be used in the real world.

Let's pretend that we have two different pitchers of lemonade.

In this example the yellow circles will represent the lemons and the blue circles will represent the water and sugar mixtures inside of them.

In our example we are wanting to compare the lemonade mixtures to see which one will have a stronger lemon taste,

meaning that there are more lemons in the pitcher.

To do this, we need to compare our ratios. In our first pitcher

we have a four to two ratio of lemons to water and sugar mixture, and in the second pitcher

we have a four to three ratio of lemons to water and sugar mixture.

We can simplify the first pitcher by dividing each side by two to get a ratio of two to one.

To see which pitcher has the stronger lemon flavor, we can make the first pitcher's water and sugar mixture

equal to the second pitchers to better compare our ratios.

We can do this by multiplying the water and sugar mixture by 3 to have a total of 3 waters and sugar.

But remember, what we do to one side

we must do to the other. So we have to multiply the 2 lemons by 3 as well, making our new amount 6 to 3.

Now we can compare the two pitchers much easier and see which has more lemons in the lemonade.

Clearly, we can see that pitcher one has more lemons in the lemonade, and will therefore have a stronger lemon taste than pitcher number 2.

As you can see ratios are important in more than just math class.

They are used in the real world too, and it's important that you are able to understand them, simplify or enlarge them, and compare them.
