Well, our goals have never changed there ever since I took over the program 25 years ago
we've always had the goal of being the best in the country and competing for the national
championship.
Obviously there is a lot of steps that you need to take in order to accomplish that goal,
obviously you need to prepare for your non conference games and conference games which
lead to a conference championship and then a birth in the NCAA tournament, regional championships,
etc.
It's a stepping stone model in terms of how you get to that final.
But I think if your setting your goals and just having a winning season or winning a
conference championship then your limiting yourself.
So anybody who competes should always have that highest level in mind and we have never
taken that route in terms of lowering our expectations.
This years team is no different and we have high expectations and are goals are set to
the most that they can be.
I mean I'm obviously looking forward to the first game of the season where we're just
getting started with practices but we're really looking forward to getting on that field and
seeing what we have and obviously looking forward to the first conference games also
important just because those are the games that matter the most and were excited to get
started.
So preparing for this upcoming season, especially with how things ended last year there's been
an added intensity for myself, I'm sure i'm not the only one.
Just trying to be a good leader on and off the field, basically motivating the new girls
and making sure that were all on the same page.
(Matos) I'm extremely excited for the upcoming season we have 20 very solid players from
freshmen to senior.
I think everybody has a chance to compete for a starting position and I think that's
really important to have on a team because if there's nobody behind you pushing you like
how are you ever going to get better.
I think were gonna do a lot, we're gonna win a lot of games and as long as we can win some important
ones we'll be good.
Well it depends on the time of the season, obviously now we have a few weeks leading
up to our opening contest so were obviously working on different fundamentals and leading
into a offense and defense and getting back into the playing shape, working our arms and
cardio vascular that type of thing.
Once we get into the season we usually play double headers on Tuesdays, Thursdays,
Saturdays, so there's not a lot of time in-between the contest to really to do anything special.
The rest might be as important as practicing during that time when we get into the middle of the season.
Our conference games are usually on Saturdays, we focus in on those opponents which we have
a little bit more information on is pretty set once we get into the season with our pitchers
being rested in-between double headers maybe one day just concentrate on batting practice, we
might work on different defenses for a opponent coming up but basically the hard work is leading
up until the spring break trip where we're really cramming a lot of things in to start
the season.
But following up from what we did in the fall, so the fall is a big plus that you can get
a lot things in out on the field in good weather.
Right now were in that phase.
In my time at Moravian I've played on two very good teams, but this year there's something
different, there's an added focus and we really just mesh well together, the whole team.
Even these new girls everybody came in with the same goal and I think we put in more work
in a time in the off season like these months leading up to now that we ever did before
so I really think this year something's different.
Our freshmen class was very impressive coming out of the fall, I was very happy how they
jelled with our returning players.
It's always a adjustment for any incoming freshmen player from the high school, travel
level to a colliegate level learning our system, the pace of the game, the pace of the practices
a little bit different then what they are use to but this group has caught on as good
as any group they I've had to be very honest with you and I think the talent level certainly
is there for them to make impacts sooner than later.
So we're looking forward to them getting up to speed most of them are up to speed so we
don't really look at them as freshmen, we're looking at everybody as Moravian College softball
players wether your a junior, sophomore, senior, freshmen those labels go away pretty quickly.
So, I couldn't be happier with their participation and what they have brought to the team so
far.
