The dark history of Japan's Hashima Island, commonly known as 'Battleship Island', has
been screened on an LED display in New York City's Times Square since Monday morning local
time.
The 15-second clip was directed by a Korean professor who aims to publicise the plight
of up to 800 Koreans who are believed to have been forced to work in undersea coal mines
on Hashima during the 1940s.
The professor also called on Japan to follow UNESCO's recommendation to install an information
center on Hashima that explains the history of the island
The video will be played one thousand times every day until Sunday.
