Hi guys, it's Christian for Digital DJ Tips and today we're going to be taking
a look at the Promo Only record pool. Promo Only is a promotional music
subscription service that provides professional DJs with the latest club
and radio music in 320 kbps MP3 and M4A lossless formats. It does this via its
custom desktop app, Pool, which is available for both Mac and PC.
Importantly all audio files and music videos available for download are fully
licensed for each territory the company services. All the subscription plans are
pay-as-you-go, they start from US$12 a month and once downloaded, all
the tracks are yours to keep forever. So, let's get stuck in and see what
Promo Only record pool is all about.
So, when you've downloaded and installed the Promo Only Pool app,
it's a really straightforward process, you've opened it up and then here
we are inside the app. As you can see, straight away it's a pretty basic design.
It's quite reminiscent of an old-school p2p client to be honest, not that I ever
used any of those of course. You've got your different tabs at the top: All Releases,
Search, Downloads, TrackTrends (which we'll come to later),
Preferences and Support. So, if we start here with All Releases, you can
see everything is in date order, these releases have just been added today. Let's
click this first one here, Saladin - Party All Night, and we get this box that
pops to the bottom. From here you can see more links here for: More Information,
Download Release or if you want to download the artwork. If we press More
Information then what actually happens is the the label's website will open up
within the app so you can you can check them out and learn a bit more about them,
which is pretty cool. So, we'll close that for now and we'll preview this first
track here, Saladin - Party All Night, will start to load. If you want to override
that and listen to it straight away, you just press play and you can skip through.
Really importantly and very good as well is that
you can listen to the full track as a preview. So moving on, we'll go to the
Charts & Playlist section and here you've got mainstream top 20, rock top 20, country,
urban, Latin and let's say for example you had a party coming up and you knew
you're gonna have to play a ton of country music but you didn't really have
enough time to listen through all the tracks but you just knew that they were
going to be asked for, then you can press here, this download button here and
that's for batch download. If you go to the Downloads tab, you'll see they''ve all
started to download. You can pause that and you can save that queue for later and
you can come back to those queues as well, you've got your download history.
If you just want to pick things to download, if we go back to the singles, you just hit
this little tick boxes here and that will send them straightaway to the
download section. Really, really easy and simple to use in that respect. The search
function here works as well, let's try something like Foo Fighters and see what's
there. BAM there you go, tracks straight away and here you've not
got just audio tracks but also video HD video tracks as well and these little
warnings here saying you know there could be some explicit lyrics or whatever,
which is always useful. So then if we move across to the TrackTrends. Now, what
the TrackTrends is... If you have been playing out and you've got your setlist,
you can choose and it doesn't matter which software you've got, there's a
drop-down box with Serato DJ, Serato Scratch Live, Traktor, Virtual DJ and Rekordbox.
You can upload your setlist into Pool and then you can send it off
anonymously to Promo Only and then what they do is they aggregate all that
information and create an online chart for different genres so DJs can see
which records other DJs have been playing, which are the most popular and whatnot, which
ones to download, which is a extremely, extremely useful. Next along, you've got
the Preferences where you can customise what kind of stuff Pool will show you,
just to streamline it all. Your different audio types are her: 320 kbps MP3
or lossless M4A, which kind of videos you want,
ID3 data versions, lots of different things to choose from
here to be able to customise it just to make getting your tracks
faster. Then, across here on the last tab is about is the Support. They have a live
chat support, the times are available here. It is great, if you were to run into
any difficulties, they're always going to be there to help you which is really,
really useful of course. So yeah, that's pretty much all there is to the Pool app
and Promo Only record pool.
To roundup, Promo Only has a vast library of the
latest tracks from a broad range of genres. Mobile DJs will be pleased to
hear that Christian, country and Latin music is also heavily featured. VJs will
be happy with the amount of HD videos on offer. Again, and most importantly all,
downloads are fully licensed, high-quality and yours to keep forever. The Pool app
is easy enough to use; albeit a little clumsy and basic. I think it could
probably do with a revamp but the TrackTrends feature is brilliant though.
This will help DJs make informed decisions on which tracks are real library
essentials when they come to download stuff. Overall, Promo Only is a good value
and honest service for professional, mobile and wedding DJs who need the
latest hits and remixes for their gigs. We have a full review over on the
Digital DJ Tips website, the link is in the description below.
