Design thinking and Participatory Video in Narino, Colombia - Duration: 6:08.

Training in Design thinking and Participatory Video

This workshop aimed to build the capacity of the Centre for Social Innovation in Nariño (CISNA)

This is why we have been collaborating

together with CISNA, here in Nariño,

to create new social innovation methodologies

Participatory Video uses participatory methodologies to identify problems

and enable the group so that they can produce their own video

about these problems and their solutions

and this way they can share this knowledge within their own communities and beyond

This is a better way to build empathic connection with the target group

and massively improve the innovation processes

We carried out a two day workshop with the Youth Platform of the city of Pasto

One of the exercises that I liked most, was ´the electric wall´

At first I thought it was impossible, and I was searching for ways to do it

trying to finding the easiest way...

It was the first time that I felt able to allow myself

to be carried by the ideas and support of the wider group

And I liked how we were all very focussed on working together

that we all managed to get to the other side and that we weren't just thinking individually

Three prototypes were developed which aimed to solve key issues faced by the youth

I feel that this exercise is very replicable: it has been so easy.

I come from an Academy, and they teach us to use research methods, project development methods..

But this one is so easy,

it´s a methodology about dialogue, about saying things naturally, in a very human way.

Instead of us thinking of the projects as 'out there'

this brings it home and turns it into a a project that comes from the community as a whole

A two day workshop was held with representatives of the teachers association of los Pastos Indigenous group

We learned important things about how to manage a camera

how to shoot a video

how to best transfer our messages through images

Which for us, being oral communities..

translating this reality into images and onto video

is something very important

and a useful tool, for our day to day life in our communities.

We are learning a practical way to make clear messages

which can reach out to different parts of our community

The workshop enabled the teachers of los Pastos Indigenous group to bring key issues to the fore

We want indigenous education to be the law, the norm for our communities.

We feel very strongly that the laws and norms created by the State

cannot be turned into custom

On the contrary...our customs must be converted into laws

What we learnt from the workshops

What i really liked was that

usually when you are making a video...

beyond the technical issues, it is usually "Me with the camera and you in front of it"

but in Participatory Video it is, "Me, together with the visions of many, creating a message, a story...

a piece of knowledge that is not just mine, but exactly that...something collective

knowledge coming from a territory, a community..from all of us

When you teach, laughter should always be present

it should be fun!

Otherwise, a very serious kind of teaching turns into something very orthodox

and even the body gets tense

But if you introduce laughter and humor

the learning becomes easy and fluid

The field work has happened together with the communities

We have mixed roles:

we were not only facilitators but also participants,

and at the same time the community were not only participants

but they were also facilitators of the process

Its a really cool combination

We have learnt about the value of listening

going beyond theory to actual practice

We understood the importance of group dynamics

how we need to first be a community ourselves before we reach out to other communities

This workshop on Design Thinking and Participatory Video took place in Nariño, Colombia

in collaboration with the d.school Paris, InsightShare and CISNA
