>> Lawrence Schovanec, President: On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, it is my privilege to welcome you
to Texas Tech University. In six years, we will be celebrating the university's
100th birthday. We have much of which to be proud.
Texas Tech has always had a sense of destiny and of the impact it would
have on the world. Our first President, Paul Whitfield Horn, in a convocation
speech to the inaugural class of Texas Tech in 1925, challenged his
contemporaries and all who have since been part of this university to think
big when he said, "Let our thoughts be big thoughts and broad thoughts. Let our
thinking be in worldwide terms." Indeed, Texas Tech University has emerged as a
Tier One research institution with a global impact, where
inclusive access and student success are still core values. For
instance, next fall, we'll be admitting our first class to Texas Tech University
in Costa Rica. Our growing international engagement and record of scholarship and
creative activity has helped us to move up in world university rankings and to
be designated as a 'highest research activity' university by the Carnegie
Classification of Institutions of Higher Learning.
I am proud that Texas Tech is an increasingly diverse community. As we
continue to grow, we need to work together to promote an environment that
fosters success for our students, faculty and staff. I hope your experience at
Texas Tech is professionally and personally fulfilling and that you come
to feel the sense of family and the intensity of spirit of what it means to
be a Red Raider. It is a culture that is characterized by an unpretentious nature,
a strong work ethic, a can-do attitude, pride and individualism, but also warmth.
Texas Tech has these qualities and characteristics that distinguish us from
other institutions. I am proud to welcome you to
Texas Tech University.
