Hi I'm Kylie Brooks, my sign name is [shows sign name].

I want to talk about today, Canada Day.

I want to acknowledge this land before I do that.

I am a Black African and I live in Toronto.

It is Indigenous land

under the One Dish One Spoon wampum treaty.

The specific nations are:

Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation

Anishinaabe

Haudenosaunee

So, on the topic of Canada Day...

To Indigenous people, Canada Day represents

the intentional oppression that they have went through from Canada

for 150+ years since 1867, when Canada was founded

I want to briefly discuss one of those awful experiences,

but there are many more, just to be clear.

Residential schools:

Canada decided to set these up

for Indigenous kids so that they would become white people,

and then there would be no Indigenous people anymore.

As such, Indigenous kids were forced to go to these schools,

and there they experienced things including but not limited to these three:

They were required to only speak English or French

Their clothes from their cultures got replaced with new clothes

They got new names in English or French

Also, very little was expected of the kids

They were abused all the time.

They learned very little compared to non-Indigenous people.

The schools were intentionally underfunded.

The kids were used as scientific experiments

- they were starved, for instance.

The last residental school closed in 1996.

Seriously.

I was born in 1991,

so that school closed when I was 5 years old.

Again, this is only one of many wrongs from Canada against Indigenous peoples.

Please take the time to learn about what Indigenous people experience

and what they want changed.

And take action to support Indigenous people.
