Good morning everybody. You don't need anything out on your desks right now.
Student: "Good morning Ms. Ana." Good morning.
We're just going to be looking at the first thing on the board and discuss it a little bit.
Can I have somebody read learning objective number 1? Jadiel.
Jadiel: "Learning objective number 1, I can follow our class norms when I participate in a conversation."
Ok great. So, learning objective number 1: I can follow our class norms when I participate in a conversation.
Who can tell me an example of what that might look like, Iziah?
Iziah: "Uh, I can... comment on when somebody's talking."
Iziah: For example, let's say I'm saying something about, Mexico maybe. Maybe like, oh Mexico is a good place, maybe somebody else can comment?"
Ok great, so you're saying you can comment on what somebody else might be saying, or somebody might be able to comment on what you're saying?
Iziah: "Yes." Okay great, Jadiel.
Jadiel: "You can listen" "listening." Ok great, so listening.
Jadiel:"Like for example, I say to Max, what are you working on? And he says "I don't know'"
Ok so active listening, listening to the people in the room, your peers. Aiden.
Aiden: "You could to what they're saying." Ok, great. So you can add on to what they're saying.
Now I'm going to switch our thinking a little bit and ask a discussion question and you're going to turn and talk about it.
What is Mexico?
Turn and talk with the people around you.
If you don't have anybody near you, I'll come over and we'll talk a little bit.
Alexis: "Mexico is a country where you eat spicy foods."
Do you want to talk a little bit Max? *no response* Okay, I'll come back to you okay?
What did you come up with?
Iziah: "Mexico....."
Marques: "How about, Mexico is a place."
Iziah:"Mexico is a place, is a place where some people go... and it's hot in Mexico." Ok so Mexico is a place where people go and it may be hot.
Ok, I like that.
Marques: "No you check your space. You better stop telling me how to act."
What are you guys discussing? Have you come up with something?
Alexis: but if you stick me with a pencil in my face, then there's going to be a problem.
Why are you sticking her with a pencil? Was it an accident? You know that's not safe.
Marques: I'm sorry.
Are you guys discussing about Mexico?
What do you know about Mexico?
Alexis: "I forgot what I was going to say." I'll let you think about it.
Marques: "Mexico has warm colors." Ok, so colors.
Did you guys discuss what you know about Mexico? Or what you think you know about Mexico?
D'auntie:"Honestly, it's mad far...i'm still thinking" That's ok.
*Iziah speaks and I cannot interpret what Aiden is saying*
mmmm, I'm hearing a lot of good words in that. Make sure you share that.
Iziah: "Ms. Ana!" Yes?
Iziah: "Mexico is..."
Hold your thought, for one second. We're going to open it up to a classroom discussion, okay? Hold your thought.
So now, as a class, let's discuss, what is Mexico?
Iziah, I know that you wanted to say something, do you want to continue with what you were saying with your hand raised?
Iziah: 'Yes." Go ahead.
Iziah: "Mexico is a place where people go. It's hot sometimes."
Iziah:"And it's far, it's far away. And maybe a plane... or a car?"
Iziah: "I have a question also."
Iziah: "Can it be a car?"
When you say, can it be a car, are you asking can you can get there by car? Iziah: "Yes."
Okay, so we're going to look at a picture and then I'll re-ask you that question, okay? Iziah: "Okay." *announcement*
Jadiel: "Ithink they use natural stuff to make human made things with their hands."
Okay so we think there might be human made things in Mexico.
Jadiel: "and natural." Okay, I like it.
Go ahead Aiden.
Aiden: Me and Jeavontae thought in Mexico... *Iziah Whispering at Jadiel*
D'auntie:"My names not Jevonta.
Aiden: "D'Auntae thought that Mexico is a different, right, it's a different place and in Mexico they speak Spanish
Aiden: "and people play soccer and wear big sombreros and they have a lot of big parties."
Ok so I'm hearing lots of traditional things that you might find in Mexico, things that we might see.
And I'm also hearing a lot of things about what might relate to that culture, right?
Is that what you guys were talking about? Students: "yes"
Ok great. Alexis, would you like to add something?
Alexis:"Yeah..
Alexis: "Mexico is a place where there's lots of spicy food."
Alexis: "And you can try and get some tacos there and they make hot sauce there and some of it is spicy."
So now we're talking about the food that we might see in Mexico.
Iziah I'm going to ask you to stand up please.
Iziah: "No!"
I know you're not trying to get in the way, it's ok. I will cut that little piece out, it's ok.
Iziah: "Wow…."
Now we're going to look at a map to answer your question. Remember Iziah the question that you brought up about the car?
Iziah: "Yes."
Go ahead Jadiel. Jadiel: "Mexico is a hot place." A hot place, the climate might be hot, it's a different temperature.
Iziah: "Can you take a.. can you, can you use transportation for example a car, a bus or a train?"
Jadiel: "You can use a plane."
So we're going to talk about that right now. Real quick.
Alexis: "Oh, can I get my glasses?" Jadiel:"You can use a plane." Yeah, Go ahead go get your glasses.
Now, if this is the United States of America and we're in the United States of America. We're up North more.
If we were to get to Mexico we could fly. We could fly over the Gulf of Mexico depending on whatever part we go to.
Iziah: "Where's NY?" NY is up north more, it's up here. You don't see it on this map because this focuses on Mexico.
But if you remember the world map we looked at... Iziah:"Mexico is where..?"
This is all of Mexico. All these different colors, these are different parts of Mexico.
Iziah: "So you can take a boat?" Hold your thought for one second Izaiah. What was your question?
Jadiel: "All of that is Mexico? All the colors?" Right, right. So this whole thing, this is all Mexico.
This is the country of Mexico. And when we were looking at the book and we looked at the chapter called Aguascalientes, that's this little piece right here. that specific piece of Mexico, that's what we're talking about.
Hm? Jadiel: "Isn't that Mexico in the middle?" This right here, Aguascalientes?
Come up.
Jadiel: "This right here."
Yeah, so this says Mexico, El District federal. Which is Mexico city, it's like the capital. So that's why it says Mexico right there. But this whole colorful picture is all Mexico.
Jadiel: "So the green thing too?" Chihuahua, Mhm. There's different...
Izaiah: "Chihuahua"
Mhm, There's different pieces within the country.
Iziah: "what's the blue part?" the blue part, what do you guys think the blue part might be?
Go ahead Aiden. Aiden: "Mexico."
I'm going to push your thinking a little bit. If this says The Gulf of Mexico, North Pacific Ocean, what do we think the blue might be?
Students: "Ocean, water, the ocean." Right, it might be water. the ocean. Large pieces of water.
So Mexico has water surrounding it on both sides. It also has different pieces within it different, kind of how we have NY which is within the United States, it kind of has like what you would consider states but in Mexico.
And like we said before, Aguascalientes is the one that takes place specifically in Esperanza Rising.
Now, we're going to move on. Any questions before we do?
Jadiel: "Do they shoot a lot in Mexico? In Mexico do they have shootings?" What do you mean by shootings?
Jadiel: "Like do they have shoot outs?" Shoot outs? Jadiel: "Yeah."
There are shoot outs within different parts of the world. So I'm not going to say that it's only in Mexico because it happens all over the world.
Jadiel: "Really?" It happens all over the world. Sadly but it does.
Any other questions before we move on? Marques.
Marques: What we're ya'll talking about when I wasn't here.
Speak up a little bit louder. Marques: "What was I.. what we're ya'll talking about when I wasn't here."
What were we talking about when Marques was out of the room? What did we look at and talk about when looking at the map?
Jadiel: "We looked at Mexico. What is Mexico." Ok, so what is Mexico?
Jadiel: "It's a map. It's a country It's a large country" So it's a large country with different pieces. So like different towns, different states within the country.
Aiden. Aiden: "Marques, we were learning about how, how like different culture and the different cultures than we have."
Right, so different culture and different things that we might see within the culture. Some of the things that you guys mentioned before were spicy foods. right? We talked about some of the different types of food.
Different weather, different climate that we might have within Mexico. Some of the different dances that they might listen to, different music that they might listen to.
Did you want to add something Marques?
Marques: "I wanted to ask that, does Mexico have a church?
Does Mexico have a church Marques: "Yes."
Ok, so Mexico, again is a huge country, right. Within this country, like the United States, there's many different thing.
There's going to be roads, there's going to be houses, there's going to be stores, there's going to be churches, there's going to be people. There's going to be animals (Jadiel:"buildings), buildings, plants, food, (Jadiel:Farms) farms, right.
So it's a country like the United States. However, they do have different traditions, beliefs, different languages that they speak, that might not be what we're used to.
And one of the languages that we listened to a little bit within the first chapter of Esperanza was....
Students: "Spanish." Right, we saw a little bit of Spanish within that first chapter. And in Mexico there are different languages spoken, one of the most common ones is Spanish.
So now, we're going to move on a little bit just so we can get to the activity okay?
*announcements*
Go ahead. Jadiel: aguascaliente México. Right, so Jadiel just read the top and it says Aguascalientes Mexico.
That's where the story takes place in Aguascalientes mexico. Right, which is this tiny little circle right here in the middle of Mexico.
Jadiel: it looks little but it's big. Right it looks little on the map but it's actually a very big area.
Just like the Bronx. If you were to look at a picture of the Bronx, it looks little on a map but it's big. Jadiel: "But it's big." But in reality it's big.
This... who wants to take a guess at what they think this might be. What do you think this might be?
Because, just by looking at it, I think I know what it is but does it have any meaning behind it? What do we think Alexis?
Alexis: "That is the flag of Mexico." Okay, so it's the country's national flag. The Mexican flag.
Jadiel: "The Mexican flag." Mhm, the Mexican flag. Great. Alright so now we're going to move on.
The learning objective number 2. Can I have someone read that for me please?
Jadiel: "Learning objective number 2: How can I, how can we use... I can use, the text and visual images to help me describe the historical setting of Esperanza Rising."
Great, so I can use the text and visual images to help me describe the historical setting of Esperanza Rising.
I'm going to put you guys in groups and for the visuals, each group is going to have pictures. You'll look at the pictures in a moment.
As well as the text, you're each going to have a little portion to read. okay? You're going to work in groups.
Now, before I send you off, what does historical setting mean?
What do we think that that might mean? Historical setting. When you think of the word historical, let's just think about that word.
Do you hear another word within historical. Jadiel.
Jadiel: "Where a story takes place." Ok, so where a story takes place, you think that might be for the word setting or historical?
Jadiel: "Setting." Setting, Ok. So we're thinking it's where the story takes place.
Now when we think of the word historical, does it sound like another word that we might have heard before?
You're nodding your head. Marques: "Yeah." What do you think? Marques: "I've heard it before." You've heard it before? Okay.
So if I say, historical setting, it.. for example...., in Mexico. In the year 18... In the 1800's there was a civil war.
There was a war within Mexico.
Marques: "A civil war?" That's a hist-. Yeah, and the book talks about a war that happens within a specific year. So we know that it's a place in time.
But in the 1800's, that was a while ago. We're in the 200's now. That was over 200 years ago.
So if it's a historical setting, it's something that happened in.....?
Students: "In the past." In the past, something that happened throughout history.
Maybe not our history within the United States, but it happened throughout history. Within the world' history.
Marques: "Uh, did they have a... Uhm Did they have a civil war with America?"
So, a civil war is when it's within the country. When the country is fighting against the country, within the country. So, let me clarify that. Lets say....
Marques: "That means, that means that we're both- were all in America it's just that, both of us are fighting."
Right, so if Northern Mexico is put against Southern Mexico, it's still a part of Mexico but there in a war.
If Mexico is battling against the United States, that's a different type of war because they're not from the same country.
So civil war is within the country. Outside of the country is a different sort of war. Go ahead Aiden.
Aiden: "I wanted to add on, it's like, it's like in Civil... Captain America Civil war. It's like that."
Right, Right. I'm glad you brought that up! Why is it called Captain America Civil war?"
Aiden: "Because they're both on the same team but they fight." Marques: "They fought each other"
Right, from the same team but they're still fighting against each other. So if it's a civil war within Mexico it's two parts within the same country but they're both fighting against each other.
Are we all on the same page? Thanks for bringing that up Aiden.
That was a good one, good analogy.
So now, we're going to look... now that we know what the question historical setting, we're going to look a little bit at the historical setting of Mexico.
So I'm going to put you guys in groups. Any questions before we move on?
Iziah: "Is it because one of them wants more power than the others? OR more land?"
What do you think? Iziah: "Like-" Why would a country go to war? Iziah: "Because maybe they want more land... More power."Yeah Iziah: "Over other people or countries."
A lot of the times and each country is different. Remember, when there is a war it's because there's some sort of issue going on. right?
So, like Izaiah said, maybe one part of the country feels like they're not being treated fairly, they're not getting enough power, they're not getting what they deserve.
Jadiel: "They're trying to take the country over." Right so that's when they say, wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute, something's not right. we got to fix this.
But the people who are in power, are they going to want to say "Yeah, let's change it!? No.
They're going to have a battle against it and try to figure it out that way.
Marques: "Who won?"
We're going to learn about that out in a minute. Alright so, for your groups, each person is going to get a sheet.
You're name is written in the group. So you know who is in your group and everybody has a sheet but I'm going to read them off first.
Izaiah: *Grunts*
So group number one, (student names). You guys can pick a spot where you want to work.
Jadiel: "I want to work, uhm..." Can you give this to the members of your group? Jadiel: "Yes." Group number 1, okay?
So you're going to go sit down with your group. Go sit with your group. And give each one of them a paper.
Group number 2 (student names) but they're not here today so it's just going to be you two working together. You guys can sit right there because you're right next to each other already.
D'Auntae: "Are we working by ourselves?" You're going to work together. The two of you.
*cooperating teacher talking about the school point store*
(student names) the three of you will work together.
Okay, does everybody have a paper? students:Yes.
Student: "Do we need a pencil?"
Who is going to distribute the paper?
Student: Do we need a pencil?
You do need a pencil, thats a good question. So take out a pencil and make sure you have a paper in front of you.
What you're going to be doing with your group is reading the paragraph that your name is und- on top of.
So if you're in group 1 you're reading the first paragraph.
