Dramatic video of Kim Jong-un overseeing missile launch released
Images have emerged of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un overseeing the launch of a missile which was hurled over Japan, the latest military test from Pyongyang to have shocked the world.
The images show Kim in a dark suit studying a map with an electronic screen in the background showing the path of the missile.
A pair of binoculars, which he apparently used to watch the missile being fired into the sky from Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, rest of the table to the side of him.
The video, which was released by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), also purportedly shows various shots of the Hwasong-12 intermediate-range missile being launched at dawn on Tuesday.
The missile headed across across North Korea and Japan's northern island of Hokkaido before breaking up and falling into the Pacific Ocean.
Kim was reported by North Korean media on Wednesday to have described the missile as "a meaningful prelude to containing Guam, the US-controlled island in the Pacific where two US bases are located.
There would be more ballistic rocket launching drills with the Pacific as a target in the future, the leader reportedly said. North Korea has carried out more than 80 missile tests since Kim assumed power almost six years ago.
Most of those missiles landed in waters near to the reclusive state, as they were fired high into space or were short range.
North Korea has previously fired projectiles over Japan – in 1998 and 2009 - although they were claimed to be satellites.
