A Video Message for Elul, from Rabbi Daniel Reiser - Duration: 1:48.

Strange, isn't it, that the Jewish new year occurs in the fall?

Not in spring, as you might expect -- when the melting of snow and the blossoming of

flowers seems to promise the world a new beginning.

No, the Jewish new year occurs in the fall -- as the leaves begin to change and as the

days begin to shorten.

By celebrating the new year in autumn, our ancestors were trying to teach us about new

beginnings.

Yes, the new year brings with it new opportunity -- but it is not an entirely blank canvas.

We do not pretend that last year is in the past, ready to be forgotten -- like snow that

melts away.

Instead, we reflect on all that has happened to us since last Rosh Hashanah, and try to

learn from our experiences -- like leaves that mature into a rich shade of orange, and

then gently fall to the ground in piles of accumulated wisdom.

We celebrate Rosh Hashanah as the days begin to shorten and the nights begin to grow -- as

time itself begins to feel more and more precious.

In this way, our new year is not so much about all that is new, but rather is about all that

is fleeting -- an earnest request that is best heard in September, a request to live

our lives with the crisp urgency of autumn.

360°, The Golden Ring of Russia Air-Balloon Festival. 4К aerial video - Duration: 5:41.

The first world's air balloons were launched back in the 3rd century AD,

but they carried no people aboard: in ancient China, the army used them to send signals.

The first manned air balloons were invented in 1783 in France.

They were called montgolfiers and charlières, after the names of their inventors:

the Montgolfier brothers and Jacques Charles.

The difference is that montgolfiers are filled with hot air while charlières are filled with hydrogen.

The true birth date of air balloons can be considered November 21, 1783,

when the first people — Pilâtre de Rozier and François d'Arlandes — raised in the sky and then safely landed.

When celebrating their success, Pilâtre and François drank some champagne,

and in doing so they gave a start to the tradition that still exists.

Up to 1920, the term aeronautics was referred to any aircraft launched in the air,

but with the development of technologies, a new term had to be invented.

Now aeronautics is applied only to flights on lighter-than-air crafts

while flights on heavier vehicles refer to the term aviation.

The history of aeronautics features lots of constantly updating records.

On May 4, 1961, Americans Victor Prather and Malcolm Ross

were the first to ascend the altitude of 34,668 meters in the air balloon.

In 2002, American traveller Steve Fossett

became the first man to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon.

And a new world record for the round-the-world flight,

11 days 4 hours and 20 minutes, was set in 2016 by Russian adventurer Fyodor Konyukhov.

It is not necessary to be a professional pilot for flying in the sky in an air-balloon:

now these crafts are widely used for touristic purposes.

Such flights are available in any region of the world, from Tallinn to Sydney,

but probably, the most popular place is Cappadocia, Turkey.

Flying air balloons are an incredibly colourful sight,

making it the reason for organising different festivals and championships.

The first one is considered to be the Gordon Bennett Cup that was held in Paris on September 30, 1906,

while the biggest event ever organised is the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

This festival attracts around 500,000 people annually,

and in 2000 the world record was set: 1,019 balloons were raised in the air.

Russia holds many air balloon festivals, too.

One of the most popular events is the Golden Ring of Russia Air Balloon Festival which was first held in 2002.

Its name refers to its venue — the cities of Pereslavl-Zalessky and Rostov Veliky

which are included in the touristic route having the same name.
