Hi! I'm Kia. I'm a first-year BME major from Lawrenceville, Georgia.
My professor is Dr. Colvin and my theme is Technocritters. Out of the five WOVEN
modes of communication, oral communication is a struggle the most
often. When I have to speak in front of people my point of view becomes inwardly
distorted, focusing on the idea of people listening, watching, and judging instead
of on what I'm talking about or what I'm trying to convey, which is distracting
and anxiety inducing. Also since I'm autistic,
I think differently and have been given the difficult task of translating my
thoughts into a language that neurotypical people understand. How can I
overcome these difficulties? Number one: practice. Practicing speaking helps me
get more comfortable and better at conveying my thoughts in words. I've
started making YouTube videos which has helped me get used to making my thoughts
public. Number two: be confident in what I have to say. If I believe that my
thoughts are worth listening to, then I will want to share them. Lastly number
three: be myself. I am not neurotypical and that's okay.
I don't have to try to act like I am to become a good communicator. I hope you
like this video. Thanks for watching!
