hi I'm Richard Brown I'm a Vermont based photographer, I've been making
photography books landscapes of people and gardens in this country and all over
the world for about 50 years, almost 50 years that's how I make my living but
the book I'm working on now is the one I really feel passionate about it's called
the last of the hill farms it's a collection of the black and white
photographs I made in the 70s and 80s when I first fell in love with a unique
lifestyle still found along the back roads of rural Vermont. while the rest of
the country seemed to welcome change and modernization much of Vermont seemed
untouched. I was moved and inspired by magical moments and I felt I wandered
into a parallel universe of unchanged rural America. A world of extraordinary
Russian beauty the small family farms Jersey Child's Belgian workhorses and
wood burning Glenwood stoves. I made these photographs to document the
people who still live a simple existence in harmony with the land these
farms had to either modernize or fail.
I hope I am a modest person but I have to say I'm very proud of this book.
these are photographs that come from the heart and I feel strongly about sharing
them with the world. The book is 136 pages featuring 90 of my best images
printed in rich duo tone. Most of these photographs are taken with
an 8 by 10 view camera which creates images with incredible detail on a
beautiful tonal range I'm working with a wonderful publisher to make sure this
book is done right and to ensure it turns out to be the masterfully produced
legacy book that the subject matter deserves. Printing a book of this quality
is not cheap so I'm here on Kickstarter to help with my portion of the printing
costs. I'm continually grateful to the farmers who welcomed me into their homes
and into their barns and let me wander around their farms photographing to my
heart's content. The farms and many of the farmers are
now gone but with this book they will not be forgotten with your support I can
take this book the last mile from a 40 year project in the making to a
published piece of history. I hope to find other people who care this much
about preservation and this unique Vermont way of life to help me get over the
finish line. Thank you for your support and please share this any one else who may
appreciate the book
