Hearthstone - What Makes a Good Meta? - Duration: 5:23.
Whats up guys its me, Disciple!
The quality and fun level of the hearthstone meta definitely changes a lot over time, especially
as new expansions and adventures get released.
But how do you really measure the quality of a meta, and how are you supposed to measure
how fun it is?
Today we thought we'd tackle the question of what really makes a meta "good" or
"bad", so let's dive right in and take a look at some of the factors we can use to
judge the meta.
So the first thing we want to address is that just because a meta is "balanced" doesn't
necessarily mean that it's good or fun to play.
The standard meta can often come down to rock paper scissors type scenarios, where deck
1 is good against deck 2 which is good against deck 3 which is good against deck 1 again.
Sure in this scenario the decks are fairly balanced and all probably have similar win
rates, but just because a player or a deck has equal chances to win/lose doesn't mean
that the game is fun or skill based.
A truly well balanced and therefore fun meta not only has a lot of different decks that
can do well, but also doesn't have many one sided match ups and allows players to
use skill to get an edge.
Now obviously this is easier said than done, but we just wanted to clear up the misconception
of a meta being good as long as there's not one dominant deck.
The next point we want to address is reducing or eliminating the amount of "non-games"
or games where one player essentially loses before they can even make any important decisions.
This can happen against huge turn one Van-Cleefs, combo cards like Astral Communion, and a wide
variety of other things.
Sure sometimes these are caused by terrible draws from you, or insane draws from your
opponent, but there are definitely some cards, like pre-nerf undertaker, that spiral the
number of non-games out of control, and these cards create an unhealthy meta.
Not only is it extremely not fun to lose without having any counterplay, but it also hurts
the competitive integrity of the game if the world champion can lose to a rank 25 player
as long as the draws pan out.
Obviously card games are going to have some amount of variance, and there will always
be games where you brick or your opponent has a pretty crazy opening, but in general
it's not too hard for Blizzard to avoid creating cards or strategies that allow for
insane openings and create non-games, and it's definitely something that's really
important when it comes to creating a healthy meta.
Another thing that's pretty important to avoid for a good meta are cards that limit
deckbuilding.
Now we don't mean things like Reno or Kazakus, since those types of effects are super sweet,
but rather things that make it so it's really bad to play anything else.
Back when Undertaker decks were at their prime, you pretty much either played an undertaker
deck, or decks with so much early game removal that they could win through a big early undertaker.
When every deck is either building around a card or building their deck so that they
can stop that card, it really limits the variety and kinds of strategies that get played, and
makes for a pretty cancerous meta.
The last thing we wanted to mention is that a good meta has both a wide variety of deck
and a high quality of matches.
There are both a lot of different viable decks, and matches are fun to play and often decided
based on skill and well thought out decisions, rather than the luck of the draw or other
rng based factors.
Now these two things can sometimes take away from each other a little bit, since if there's
a lot of viable decks chances are that there are a couple really bad matchups you might
run into among them, versus if there's only one good deck then skill is gonna play a huge
part in how well people play the mirrors and therefore create a higher quality of matches.
Still though it's definitely possible to balance these two things well enough together
to create a meta with a lot of decks but still really high quality gameplay, and that's
what being a good meta is really all about.
Those are some of our thoughts on what makes for a good meta, what do you guys think makes
a good meta?
Let us know in the comments!
And it looks like that's gonna be it from me, if you enjoyed the video drop a like,
