that many years ago by our founders and is still very much alive today if people
are the most important part of our business then our collective effort to
ensure each other's safety is certainly a core value for decades we work
diligently to improve and even Excel and safety we've been able to celebrate
milestones that were once thought impossible however safety is a race
without a finish line we all know that as good as we are we must continue to
refocus and re-engage and to ensure we prevent the next injury our mission is
to create an injury free work environment and our goal is zero
injuries let me be clear we value your personal safety above production quality
costs and service our guiding principle is to become a great company greatness
can only be called success when we can guarantee each other safety over the
next few years we will be working diligently to take safety to a new level
of performance there are many changes ahead our focus on preventing
life-changing events will give us a renewed focus on the potential of
incidents in our workplaces improving ergonomics and our operations through
employee engagement and automation projects improving and updating the many
tools in the Sunoco safety toolbox to closer align with the Sunoco performance
system improving the digital management of leading indicators and safety to
allow for more agile decision-making and move our safety leaders from the desk to
the shop floor these along with other
initiatives and efforts will create change which is necessary to make us a
great company I look forward to your engagement in the change process
leadership is a key component that I want to discuss the leadership of our
operations plays a key role in the success of safety the culture and our
individual operations is a direct reflection of leadership a plaque that
sits on many of our desks says you will achieve the level of safety that you
demonstrate you want to achieve effective safety leadership is more than
telling people to be safe it is about demonstrating the value of a person's
safety we must always without hesitation lead with safety and all that we do I
want to share some points we must be diligent about our decision-making is
influenced by the work environment we create we must make our safety and the
safety of our co-workers the overriding responsibility as I said before safety
has ranked and importance over production quality cost and service our
procedures processes and rules have been developed because some type of failure
and in many cases because of an injury please be consistent and purposeful in
your actions to follow them provide feedback when something prevents you
from meeting that expectation near miss events observations and unsafe
conditions are all free learning opportunities for us we must bring these
forward without fear or apprehension and sure we take action when we give
guidance or instruction about safety we must use the same level of detail and
emphasis we give the other components of our work telling someone to be safe
falls well short of providing clear expectations or instructions be specific
about how to perform the assignment safely
hanging on the walls of each of our facilities around the world is our
safety policy statement and it reads it is the policy of the company to provide
a safe and healthy work environment for the protection of its most vital
resource sunoko employees the health and safety of the employee shall be the
greatest interest to all levels of the organization ranking and importance
above production quality costs and service
additionally we believe all personal injuries can and should be prevented and
while this responsibility begins with me it is shared by each of us general
managers are responsible for their business units operational leaders for
their facilities supervisors for their areas of responsibility and individual
associates for their work areas all employees at every level are expected to
accept full responsibility for their own safety and the safety of those with whom
they work there is no place in sunoko for an unsafe employee the company will
maintain a vigorous safety and injury prevention program at each location and
will allocate the necessary resources to ensure a safe and healthy work
