There is an every growing issue on the US-Mexico border as we speak.
In the city of Tijuana, there are thousands of immigrants coming up from Central America,
in caravans seeking asylum in the US.
These citizens are seeking asylum due to escape gang violence in their native country, or
possible political intimidation in Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua to name a few.
US Border Authorities limit asylum applications to 40-100 per day.
So, there is a huge bottleneck right now considering there are over 3,000 individuals tied-up.
President Trump's Administration introduced a "metering policy" that limits the amount
of people who can apply for asylum each day.
This is a new policy introduced by his administration, causing quite the backup.
Waiting times have been turned to at least months as there were initially 3,000 individuals
and now over 6,000.
Some cannot prove that their lives are in danger in order to be granted asylum and this
is where the conflict comes in.
Side one says "accept the immigrants - give them asylum."
There are escaping violence and seeking asylum along with humanitarian assistance and the
United States is more than capable to provide that assistance.
We may not be able to see their verification of their life-threatening challenges, but
we can identify in the cultural climate they're coming from, there are most likely those factors.
The other side is to turn them away - no asylum granted.
This is coming from the position that the US does not have the resources to act as a
humanitarian country and we do not have the jobs or economy or natural resources to support
this many individuals.
They also say "what kind of precedent does this set in the going forth climate.
Looking at it, about 350 immigrants have decided to stay in Mexico to figure out their next
move.
President Trump suggested that they may need to stay in Tijuana for a while as their applications
are processed and this is an ongoing issue.
