Hey, how you doing bro?
I'm doing alright, man.
What's up?
I met this girl the other week and I'm trying to figure out what's going on with my body.
My heart rate it seems to be a little off
Really?
Yeah.
Are you like, falling for her?
I might be.
Is it ok if I feel your heart?
Yeah, go ahead.
Alright, let me see.
Oh my god that is - that's very fast.
How fast is it?
Really fast man.
Ok, that's not good.
So have you seen the movie Gattaca?
Oh, the movie with Ethan Hawke where they put a heart monitor on his chest and he's running on a treadmill?
Yeah, sort of like that but it's called an ECG
Exercise physiologists will like put some electrodes on you and have you do some exercise
and you can see the rhythm of your heart and see if you have any heart conditions.
So I know a couple of exercise physiologists
if you wanna go and get your heart checked out.
Hey mam, can you check my friends heart?
It's beating super fast and just doesn't feel right.
So can you explain your symptoms to me?
It's just beating really fast - I can't explain it.
So we can conduct an electrocardiogram on you and it'll allow us to measure the electric
currents in your heart due to a depolarization and repolarization.
Would y'all like to perform this test?
Will it tell me if my heart's ok?
Yeah, yeah yeah
Well, it is the most important and accurate means of measuring quality and quantity
of your heartbeat, so yes.
Yeah, ok sure.
So we'll take you into the office and get you set up with the monitor.
Alright cool, thanks.
Alright, so this is the monitor that we will be hooking you up to.
We'll put ten electrodes on your upper body to measure the
depolarization and repolarization of your heart.
What do you mean the repolarization and depolarization?
Of course! So this is what we're looking for
This is a regular pqrst interval - it's what we'll be
printing out, this is going to be your atrial depolarization,
ventricular depolarization, and ventricular repolarization so since you're
complaining of heart problems what we're going to be looking for some
abnormalities in this so you might be seeing bradycardia, which is a heartbeat
of less than 60 beats per minute and atrial fibrillation - that's just an
irregular baseline. It's most likely not those symptoms for you just because you
would feel weak, faint, and those were none of the symptoms that you complained to us.
So due to the symptoms that you were describing to me what we will mostly be
looking for are one of these two. Worst-case scenario is ventricular
fibrillation, this is abnormal very fast ventricular contractions.
This is most likely not the case because it is signs of you having a heart attack at the moment
so we're hoping that it's tachycardia, that's just that your heart is going
more than 100 beats per minute. It could be due to something as simple as stress,
maybe you drank too much caffeine, it happens to many people doing exercise.
Worst case, it could be signs of a heart attack, however we'll look at it
and talk to you about it at the end.
Ok, so to begin the test we will need you to
remove your shirt and ensure that you have no chest hair - this will help us
to get the best signal from your heart.
*Pause*
Oh yeah, that's not gonna work.
*Scissors intensify*
*Beep*
Whew! That's much better.
All right now we will connect the electrodes.
So first we will place an
electrode in line with each armpit just below the clavicle.
Don't be scared Nick, don't be scared.
Then, one above the iliac angle on each side of your body.
Next, we will place one electrode in the fourth intercostal space to the right
and the left of the sternal margin.
Now we are going to place three electrodes
in the fifth intercostal space to the left of the sternal margin -
one in the midclavicular line, one in the anterior axillary line, and one on the left of the
mid-axillary line. Lastly we will place an electrode in the space between the
contacts placed on the fourth intercostal space and the fifth intercostal space.
How are you feeling? Feeling okay.
Not scared? Ready to get this over with.
So now we will begin the test and see what's going on.
You're going to be fine, brother.
So these are the results of your test. As you can see, you have a slightly elevated heart rate
which may mean you have tachycardia. Do you think there's anything that has
caused you to have this condition?
I have been seeing this girl - Yeah, my man's in love
I must be.
*Bro clap*
Hey snapchat, so I'm with my friend Nick He's about to meet this girl,
let's see how it goes
Oh hey Nick, how's it going?
It's going alright, I just got back from the physiologist's office
and I've got a line for you.
Okay.
Roses are red, violets are blue,
and I get tachycardia when I look at you.
