Exclusive interview with Dr. Fayrouz Samir | video - Duration: 12:29.

I'm fayrouz Samir Abd Elbaqi , I'm an artist

I'm an assistant professor in faculty of fine arts, painting section

I started getting into art when i was about five years old

that was because my mother was creating puppets she was a puppet show director

and she had a room in the house that served as an atelier

so we would go in and see her draw and create characters

and design the dolls when we were little

in addition to my father, the poet Samir Abdel Baqi, who would often tell us stories

that he writes for children and i would draw them

and I made my first book when I was 7 years old

my dad made me a surprise , he collected all of my drawings and printed them into a book called "A message to the sun"

so i was raised in a house that appreciates art

my mother, Naglaa Raafat, would take me with her to the theater

when she was directing or when she was designing the decor

so i was used to the lighting and the colors

so i learned from start to finish how to the work on the papers becomes a reality on set

My mom is an Art school graduate

so I have always wanted to be like her

after senior year, I got a high score ,

so all my friends started to tell me ..

....to not waste my grade and not go to art school

but i knew my goal and passion

so i enrolled in art school

at first , I enjoyed the graphic section

but i stayed a bit there and didn't like it

and so I switched to painting and sculpting

i would go to the sculpting section during the afternoon

i would try to balance all three sections

going to art school is fun

its more of an inspiring atmosphere than..

you actually learning information .

so it was a great experience to begin my art journey professionally

when I first started , I met dr. Weshahi, god bless his soul

he was an amazing artist

we would often discuss..

that I was like a sponge

I wanted to learn everything

and why the school had separate sections

and I tried to do that

so I tried all three sections and

and that inspired me and taught me a lot of things

and it gave me the idea. After liberate myself from the graduation project

I would go and draw things from around local areas, Al Hossein , Cairo Citadel ....

for example the Local Bathing rooms caught my attention

its still there and it is frequented by many

so I made my graduation project about it

I started using a large areas 4m x 2m

it was a huge challenge for me

that made me have more freedom with the extra spaces

and I wanted to portray the ancient walls

and at the same time give it a modern twist

after the Master degree and PhD degree

I began asking myself what is the purpose of my art

I'm not doing art so it to be pretty

I'm sending a message

an idea,

our PhD is called the philosophy of painting

so I wanted to convey a philosophy through the canvas

I began experimenting

the Bougainvillas caught my attention from all over egypt

I'm always thinking of egypt

I'm always looking back to my roots

so I displayed my art in a gallery and called it [bougainvilleas]

showing various shapes and colors in every piece

but I let go of normal varieties of shapes

I would use geometrical shapes

circles , squares , triangles......

use different techniques every time

Etching , stencil,..... I was trying all techniques

that also gave me confidence

after that I started getting into digital art

and started digitally painting and then repaint over it.

that allowed me to use various styles in the same canvas

at the end it is painting .. when I paint using oil

or acrylic material

it is converted back to be a painting ..

after it was just a print or just a digital

after this..

the recent idea that I used in my latest art show..

where I went back to old style

I searched about the old Egyptian art

I wanted to go back

as we are the reference of Art, the artwork of Fayoum

the famous Fayoum Faces is the beginning of profile painting

how they started to mix the color oxides and pigments powder

with honey wax all natural

stones and honey wax that gave it durability

to allow it to be exist till now

even before they start

to discover adding oils to the color powder

to be an oil based colors

I decided to search

on this specific technique to master it

also ..

with a modern approach

to use the old technique in a modern artwork

all the artworks inspired from the Lake of Fayoum

I spent a lot of time at the lake side

to feel the colors changes

and forms changes

I have all my art exhibition about

Lake of Fayoum

but by using the Encaustic technique

by using honey wax, fire and heat

at current time

the world is wide open

not as we were students before 10 years

to find an artwork or a book

or to visit a museum we were suffering..

it is difficult to travel to France

or the USA

just to watch the artwork of the world

The internet help a lot to visit

all the museums and see other artists work

this gave us the eas to find the right conception

that you want and take ideas from here and ther

and develop your individual art character

I displayed my art outside Egypt, in italy

I was a comesear

in the Mediterranean sea art festival

also in Kuwait

and Russia

that gave me a good experience

with the big world of art

we have to consider art

as the language of the world

and in the contrary, the more your art portrays you

the more original it becomes

all artists learn from each other but,

the idea is how to be independent with your own character and work

so that your art is like your own fingerprint

Egypt is full of tourist attractions rich with art and shows our heritage

filled with different ideas and subjects

so I always keep them in mind

its subconscious

my eyes are always drawn to egyptian works of art

for example cats tail grass

cats tail grass, you find it around roads

around water canals

around lakes

everywhere in Egypt

I started looking at it

how its colors changes, the shapes changes over seasons

then it blooms with a beautiful flower

nice white flowers

then it turns to yellow dead plant

I started consider it as an art subject

to study it

I made a big art exhibition I called it "wind grass"

I went out the familiar

I played with colors, shapes and harmony

the outcome from local items..

that we encounter every day ..

to a new item that you would be surprise that you have seen before

you can find my originality

in the encaustic

the material is purely Egyptian

you can find it in my models. I draw a lot of figures

the egyptian woman is a frequent topic in my mind

I made a series called [ i don't want to...]

i don't want to listen

i don't want to talk

i don't want to see

it's about a woman being in a social environment

much like our arabic environment that we live in

and that she refuses to listen or talk

a kind of refusal to the never ending rules of society

that always push woman back instead of forward

and in other paintings

I used the woman by herself

in a situation where she's waiting

where shes observing the world

where shes batteling inner turmoil

there's also a group of drawings I've done about cancer patients

something I've experienced second hand

about how the medecine sucks the life out of the patient and not the sickness itself

so that was an experience just like many others

in this world, the internet has become an important tool to us all

it opened an important road to all artists

that you can

present your artwork at anytime

without needing to put it in a gallerie

and all the planning that comes with it

and all the money you spent on it

the internet allows us to see our work any time with a click of a button

it has great benefits for us all with us able to post about all kinds of work

and we have to use that to our advantage

if we don't

then we are ignoring the outside contact

and lose our touch with the world

of course the idea of ghadaelzayat.com

is an excellent idea,

cause it opened a door to post your artwork online as a serious project

and it's safe

and it will hopefully be very successful , its very safe

so the artist doesn't have to be afraid that their drawings are going to be used

or unprotected

and that encouraged me

and i know her from college

she's a serious , hard working person

so that made me very supportive of her idea

of course other artists got encouraged like me

the website is enriched with people that project their artwork ,

and I hope that I continue my work

and give her more pieces of work and put them on sale

in such an open field of artwork marketing
