Chris Myers – Welcome to the John Deere Product Engineering Center or PEC. I'm Chris Myers, the
Global Director of Product and Solution Development for the Global Tractor
Platform. With 1600 employees from more than 15 countries, this is John Deere's
largest product engineering facility worldwide. Here, we develop tractors and
engines, as well as components, for many of our product lines around the globe.
But what sets Deere apart…is our four key values…"
Quasadia Limbrick – Quality, innovation, integrity, and commitment…
Everyone lives by those four core values.
Lee Birch – At the product
we're looking at tractor designs…20 years, 30 years out.
What will farming look like, what will the population be, roads and construction
and farming, those are all important aspects.
Jeff Lappe – We're always trying to get better and
we're not just resting on the successes that we've had in the past.
Micah Pruisner – The culture at PEC is dominated by our culture of collaboration. We've got a lot
of diverse teams here at the PEC that work on all facets of the product.
Quasadia – I get to work in the we space, so this is pretty much innovative space to work in…it's
more of an open concept work area…every day we get to choose where we want to
sit…you get an opportunity to network with different people every day because
somebody different's going to be sitting next to you every day.
Mike Weinert – We really start with developing those products very much in an analytical environment. So, we do a
lot of science in the development of these products.
Shivanandini Tanuku – The way we try to meet our customer expectations is by taking all the
customer needs, tailoring them into our requirements to design a product that
has quality built in. But we also focus on getting customer feedback and
improving our products and including…that feedback, into our next gen products.
Lee – In this space, we can bring people together and level the playing
field. So, a shop floor person and a manager and a supplier and design
engineer can all visualize a tractor in the same space… and in here we can
we can make it full-scale, life-size, that can really help people understand spatial
relationships, how large or how far apart parts are.
Heidi – It's not until we actually have prototypes or durability machines that we would be able to get out into
field testing. And our processes are such that we have a durability build, which is
an early build, then our limited production, and then finally production.
Kevin Hagen – We're here to make a good product. We're not so much interested in making a
product quickly, we are making a product of quality.
Joel Carlson – We'll disassemble the axles and transmissions, fix any broken parts. May
diagnose a problem if the tractor's got a problem.
Ben Swartzrock – We do a really good job of testing out reliability and solving problems before the customer ever gets
to it…we won't release a product until we feel confident that it will be
successful in the marketplace.
Kevin – We're looking for unusual sounds, something
that customers are just going to appreciate because they don't want some
nasty vibrations or a lot of gear whining while they're operating the equipment.
Dan Balk – We test subzero, we test hot…we test altitude, we test everything that can be
possibly tested here at the site.
Nandini – My role as a PV&V engineer is to test
the components. So we are studying the customer duty cycles from customers all
across the world and making sure that our test plans are tailored in a way
that we're meeting all the conditions that our vehicles see, no matter where the customer is.
Laura –People always think it sounds pretty neat to say I break parts for John Deere
for a living…We get to be the part of the process that says this is
what broke, this is why it broke, this is how it broke. This is probably a good way to fix it.
Ben S – When it comes to testing a product diverse, you're basically just
trying to beat very tough corner conditions that we see out in the field
and trying to replicate those and accelerate those through our testing process.
Preston Gibbons – If there is anything that might be wrong…we don't want it to happen in
the tractor, we want it to happen in this test cell so that we know exactly what
could go wrong. And if there is something wrong, fix it right away.
Joe Carlson - We test sometimes beyond what any tractor would go through…that way there's no problems.
Dan D – I see an incredible level of commitment in all of our employees here, willing to go the
extra mile to make sure that we get things right and willing to help their
colleagues out when they do need help…
Logan – Customers come first…Our number one goal is to make a piece of equipment that will not break.
Micah Pruisner – We take an enormous amount of pride and detail and trying to make sure
every facet, every detail of the product's understood.
Preston – If you don't know the answer to a question, there is somebody here in this building knows that answer.
Having that knowledge base and the ability to communicate really well works great here.
Mark Priest – People all over the country recognize John Deere as a leading
corporation and it's a great source of pride for me to be an employee.
great pride in being able to say what we do and do what we say.
We always find a way to make it right with our customers and our products that we deliver.
Nicole Goettsch - The values that John Deere has are something that is really ingrained in the
culture here and that everyone takes very seriously.
Heidi – John Deere as a company I think is very well respected.
It's a company that has a lot of basis on our
core values and we really live that day in and day out.
Solomon Otim – I love the people. It's a very laid-back atmosphere. It doesn't feel like work.
Lindsey Schuler – The opportunities are endless…So what you think you might be doing 20 years from now, that job
might not ever exist today. And that's pretty cool to see the company evolve.
Ben – Our customers have very high expectations and our goal is to exceed
those and give them even more that what they are even looking for.
Micah – We're shipping product all over the world. So, getting that understanding of
how needs vary by region, by environment, by season, by crop has become vital to
understanding the variation of our own product.
Laura – I'm helping to feed the world.
It's a company that our mission and our goals are to help the farmers to be able
to produce a food that feeds this world.
Rebecca - We are constantly considering the
customer in every decision that we make. There's not one decision that's made on
the product that doesn't have the customer in mind. We're always working on
next generation projects and looking towards the future, so there's never a
dull moment. When we get done with one project, we're on to the next.
Nandini – I feel privileged to work here. John Deere is a company that is trying to change the way
we farm across the world.
Dan D – It's a continual challenge to, one, understand
what might help make customers more productive. But even better is how to do
that. And to be a part of that is really special.
Bruce Swanson – It's really quite proud when you can see a brand-new tractor
going down the road and say, 'Yeah, I worked on this part of that tractor.'
Heidi – We want to provide the best tractor we can to our customers.
And to do that, we all need to work together.
Chris M – We are very proud of our capabilities,
our technology based innovations, our production system
solutions and our employees that have sustained John Deere for more than 180
years. And we will continue to support our customers with the most innovative and
best value products into the future.
