My name is Stan Pletcher. I'm an ophthalmologist, and I work at Great Lakes Eye Care
I work both the Niles and the St. Joe office I trained
starting at Goshen College, and I did my undergraduate there
and then I went to Indiana University in Indianapolis from my medical school training.
After that I trained in ophthalmology at the Indiana University School of Medicine ophthalmology department
When I visited here in 1987
Thinking about moving closer to my home
I was engaged to learn about Great Lakes Eye Care. Great Lakes Eye Care
was different than any practice I had seen.
I could tell that it was gonna be a place where
we were gonna be on the cutting edge and where we would encourage each other in our practice
and that has certainly been the case
Ophthalmology is really an exciting area of Medicine. I enjoy it immensely
I love talking with patients to
hear what's causing them trouble in their vision and a lot of times it's a mystery.
We're working towards what's causing the vision loss.
The nice thing about ophthalmology is that most of the time there's a good solution.
There are a lot of modern advancements in ophthalmology
so everyone of course is concerned about their vision
and how how clear they're gonna see and is their vision gonna last them a lifetime
and certainly that's our goal for the vision to last a lifetime.
I've been married for 25 years. We have four wonderful children
and I have one in graduate school now,
and one in college one that I'm doing lots of college visits with,
and the last who's a dancer at home in fifth grade.
The last two years I've been the president of the Christian ophthalmology Society
this is a society of doctors in the US
but also internationally and we have probably over 700 Christian ophthalmologists that are part of this group.
This has been very exciting for me, and so I'm involved in helping direct their program and the board
and seeing what God is calling us to as doctors?
I've been involved in a big project over the last 10 years my project is called Global Sight Alliance, and this is a
project that involves physicians from all over the world that are involved doing missions and
helping in charitable and humanitarian ways around the world.
One of the most exciting things I'm involved with right now is
that we're making
mobile microscopes for ophthalmology missions, and so I have a partner in Kentucky
and we've been able to create
a microscope that instead of being 200 pounds is 35 pounds and you can carry it with you
on an airplane to do missions and do quality cataract surgery around the world.
For me excellent patient care is
about listening and
really putting an ear to each patient's concerns.
Some patients want to know all the details, other patients want to know very little details
and so listening and trying to communicate the right amount for a patient
while we're taking good care of their eye.
But I think it's about communication to me in terms of excellent patient care
and of course quality of care it has to be there as well.
