When I first saw you

I saw love

And the first time you touched me

I felt love

And after all this time

You're still the one I love

Looks like we made it

Look how far we've come my baby

We mighta took the long way

We knew we'd get there someday

They said, I bet, they'll never make it

But just look at us holding on

We're still together, still going strong

You're still the one

You're still the one I run to

The one that I belong to

You're still the one I want for life

You're still the one

You're still the one that I love

The only one I dream of

You're still the one I kiss, good night

Ain't nothin' better

We beat the odds together

I'm glad we didn't listen

Look at what we would be missin'

They said, I bet, they'll never make it

But just look at us holding on

We're still together, still going strong

You're still the one

You're still the one I run to

The one that I belong to

You're still the one I want for life

You're still the one

You're still the one that I love

The only one I dream of

You're still the one I kiss good night

You're still the one

You're still the one I run to

The one that I belong to

You're still the one I want for life

You're still the one

You're still the one that I love

The only one I dream of

You're still the one I kiss good night

I'm so glad we made it

Look how far we've come my baby

Video: Opinion: Canada's next 150: Opinion: Canada's responsibility to Indigenous youth - Duration: 3:09.

My hope for the future of this country is that

I think it's really important that Canadians understand there's many

fundamental differences that continue to exist between the lives of Indigenous

children and non-Indigenous children in this country. This is a product of a

long-standing set of race-based discriminatory policies that Canada as a

state has undertaken. And what that is meant is that Indigenous peoples face

barriers to success and achievement that are far different than non-indigenous peoples.

Indigenous peoples have also suffered from what amounts to cultural genocide.

The long-standing attempt to erase and destroy Indigenous cultures in this country.

It was, in fact, children that were used as the vehicle by Canada to

eliminate indigenous cultures from this country through the residential schools.

Canadians need to understand our history. Most importantly, we need to make the

fundamental changes within ourselves, within our organizations, within ourselves

as a country in order to heal from these wounds. Central in this is

actually unpacking and directly confronting many of the highly

racialized notions that many Canadians carry of towards Indigenous peoples.

Central in this also is unpacking the legacies that have directly suppressed

Indigenous rights. Central in this lastly, is the ability for Indigenous peoples to

set their own paths for the future

For indigenous children to succeed in this country we need to be talking about

health, we need to be talking about clean water, we need to be talking about

certain elements of violence that exist and the healing that needs to happen.

Most importantly, Canadians need to adopt what many call a trauma-informed approach

to who we are and where we're going. Trying to repair the damage, the deep-seated

damage, that has been inflicted upon Indigenous communities and supporting

and enabling the healing that needs to happen within communities

Moving forward as we try to create the society that is free from racism, free from discrimination,

we have to focus on those young people that are coming up and

ensuring that they are given the best possible life no matter where they live,

no matter who they are, no matter whether they're Indigenous or not in this country.
