Hi, my name's Michelle Cyr. I'm a co-founder of
Bread is Not Enough. I will be playing
Martha and performing a number of other roles
And I'm Julian Legere I'm also
a co-founder of Bread is Not Enough
and I'm also co-producing and directing
the show, A Piece of My Heart.
I was really tired of
not being adequately represented
I think that one of the most important
ways that we can fight against
the silencing of women and the silencing
of people of colour and the silencing of
queer people that's happening in the world right now
is to tell their stories. We want to
change everything, and that's
really what theatre can do.
It changes the dialogue
a huge amount
and it changes
the story to a large degree as well.
It shows the strength
the vulnerability, the humanity,
the compassion, the anger,
the ambition, the complete
experience of the women around
me that I see
fighting this fight that's going on
in the world right now. Personally I
have struggled with a number of
life-altering events, shall we
say, and having that
presented on stage
with a number of true stories that
don't get told very often
is a really big deal for me.
The value of theatre is people seeing themselves
and their experiences onstage. If all the
experiences onstage or most of the
experiences onstage are the experiences of
middle to upper class, straight,
cis, white men
then theatre has failed.
Town hall after town hall after panel after panel
and seeing things not really changing.
We're calling Vancouver to action,
with great love and hugs,
put your money where your mouth is
give us a shoutout
it's gonna be glorious!
