During my trip to Nabire, Papua, I had a chance to swim with the fabulous creatures,
Whale Shark.
It was one of my best experience ever to swim with the sacred creatures that Papuan people
believe as the guardian of Cendrawasih Bay.
Eventhough deep down I am really worried that later my descent probably wont be able
to see whale shark anymore.
As greenhouse gases are keep emitted to the atmosphere through transportation, industry,
and also the degradation of forest and peatland, I am worried that my fear will come through.
Ocean will get more acid and warmer.
The coral will be bleached, plankton shall perished, and fish wont be able to survive.
Hi, My name is Muhammad Malik.
I am 26 years old geologist from Bandung, Indonesia.
This is my role in achieving SDG no 13, Climate Action.
After I graduated college in 2013 I worked as hydrologist at peat ecosystem restoration
project at Katingan, Central Borneo.
My duty was to assist in develop hydrological model of peat rewetting so that during the
drought season, the peatland can keep its moisture and cannot be burnt.
Our yet drained peatland must be rewetted so that land subsidence wont occurred and
carbon are kept stored in the ground.
Right now as a researcher in Bandung, I am doing my independent research to tackle several
uncertainty in estimating peat volume, which is on peat depth and area.
This two aspect are crucial to measure how much carbon stored in peatland so that peat
conservation can be monetize and economically valuable.
This peat research is very important because the degradation of peatland gives one third
of Indonesia's emission.
During the forest fire in the 2014 and 2015, Indonesia's daily emission are even larger
than the US as second largest carbon emitter country in the world.
Peat restoration is a major priority in Indonesia.
Indonesian Government has set Peat Restoration Agency (BRG) with the mission to restore
two million hectares of degraded peatland until 2020.
I believe for sure that my government need every help available in order
to realize this goal.
Carbon accumulation in the atmosphere and global warming killed ocean creatures as the
ocean absorb much of the temperature rise and 30% CO2 produce by humans.
We need every action we are able to do to protect our mother earth against climate change
and we need to do it now.
We need to spend every waking minutes of our life in battle against climate change.
I will not stop because I want to be able to say to my kid when they grow up and ask
me what were I doing when global warming was happening and I now
what was coming down the road.
I want to be able to say, guys, I was doing everything I know how to do.
