Persuasion Video 2 - Duration: 4:44.

Hi guys!

Today I will be explaining the inoculation theory.

The basic concept of this theory is based on the idea that you expose an individual

to both persuading arguments and counter-arguments of a certain topic they will be more likely

to be able to defend the topic at hand.

This idea was originally inspired by vaccinations which exposes the human immune system with

a weak form of a specific virus or bacteria in order to increase the body's defense

to this specific infection.

We apply this concept at work a lot.

I work as an insurance agent for an independent agency.

It happens quite often that we will get a phone call from an individual who is unhappy

with their current carrier because of their monthly premium, a prio claim or something

of that sort.

They don't know what type of coverage they have and have never been informed of what

any of the coverages even mean or what they cover.

They are confused and just want someone to give them the basic information just enough

to where they know whats going on and how much they will be paying.

In most of these cases we will ask them to send us a copy of their declaration page,

which basically just tells us what type of coverage they have, and all the information we need so in order to run a quote

this way we can give them a clear picture of what they have versus what we recommend.

This defers the conversation from how much the policy will cost to what type of coverage

does this client need.

This is not only good for the agency, but also good for the client so they can make

an informed decision at the end.

A lot of times the client will find out they didn't have a specific coverage, for example

water or foundation coverage on their home, and will choose to add this coverage on.

Obviously the premium is still a factor in their ultimate decision, but by giving them

a detailed explanation of coverage limits and what coverages are good for this makes

the client more knowledgeable and they are able to make an education decision.

Another example would be writing a research essay for school.

My teachers have always taught me to include the nay-sayers or the counter arguments in

my paper.

You include just enough information on the counterargument and then elaborate on your

supporting argument in order to provide both point of views in your paper.

This not only gives me as the writer credibility, but it also shows that I did my research and

that I will have a supporting argument for every negative comment.

Overall, inoculation theory can be used in many different ways, but the reason why this

concept caught my eye is because its main focus is educating.

Educating people on the topic at hand in order to hand them the tools to form their own opinion

and be able to back it up with evidence.

With the insurance example, the inoculation theory comes in handy as a way to win over

clients by showing you have their best interest at heart.

So you are persuading them to accept your offer because you have given them the "why."

With the research paper example, you are exhibiting the inoculation theory by persuading the reader

to believe in your hypothesis by including small doses of counter arguments along with

research to break down any inconsistencies with these counter arguments.

So in the future, if you are trying to persuade someone to buy a product, buy into an idea

you have, or participate in an event, make sure to include possible counterarguments

in your own argument.

This not only saves you time by getting these points out of the way, but it also leads the

listener or listeners to asking less questions.

Finally Ill leave you with this, Vaccines do more good than harm so give them a little

taste of the bad stuff.
