The brief was to design a multipurpose chair with vertical stacking capabilities
and options such as row linkage, seat
and row numbering. It's primarily an all-plastic chair without any metal core.
It consists of a shell, a base with upside-down V-shaped legs
and the integrated arm sections. In fact, the shell was the first part we honed to perfection.
We don't normally tackle one thing first and then gradually proceed to the next, but it was so vital
to get the shell's ergonomics right to give
us maximum freedom
for the frame design. You achieve comfort by constantly conducting sitting tests,
building models and having these
repeatedly tested by different people.
It's a sculptural approach and not an additive one.
And that makes the chair so interesting. It looks like a seamless sculpture.
The best experience with the project was the first time we presented it.
We'd completed the shell model and put virtually one side in the frame and arm section.
And when Wilkhahn saw it they were just as enthusiastic, if not even more so, than we were about our work.
