The problem is, despite everything they do, they're finding it harder to get ahead,

or even to just get by.

They're more productive than ever

but they're working longer hours for lower pay and fewer benefits.

Meanwhile, CEOs made 271 times more

than the average worker last year.

That gap has grown substantially since 1965 when the ratio was just 20 to 1.

This didn't happen by accident.

The truth is instead of getting a fair shake

working people are getting screwed.

Corporations and the super wealthy

along with the politicians that do their bidding, have rigged the system.

Unions level the playing field, countering the influence big corporations have on our economy

and our democracy.

Unions give working people the voice they need

to negotiate better wages and working conditions,

but also to advocate for the policies that benefit everyone.

Through unions, nurses fight for staff to patient ratios

that make our health care system better.

Teachers fight for smaller class sizes

that make our schools stronger.

Unions are also essential to empowering communities of color.

African-American union members earn 31% more

and Latino union members 23 percent more than their non-union peers.

This Labor Day, we're confronting the rigged economy head-on.

We're standing up to the dishonest attacks

of the corporate special interests

and we're calling on all our elected representatives and candidates

to give working people the respect they deserve.

and remind people that the freedom to join strong unions

is critical to building an economy that works for everyone.
