Natalie Baird - Visualizing Changing Oceans: Inuit Knowledge and Participatory Video - Duration: 3:11.

Inuit and coastal communities are experiencing rapid and uncertain

changes to their ocean environments

and are very aware of the threat this poses

to their food security, livelihoods

and cultural well-being.

I have seen a lot of changes. Ice forms much later in the fall

and breaks up much earlier in the summertime.

In order to better understand arctic ecosystem changes,

we must bridge the gap between Western science

and indigenous knowledge.

As we are living in the arctic, we are at the front line to

witness the change.

Younger generations will be facing much more

climate change than we can see today.

Youth and others have unique perspectives

of intergenerational cultural adaptation

to changing environments. How can we best

communicate these perspectives to a

larger audience?

My name is Natalie Baird and I'm a Masters of environment

student at the University of Manitoba.

Our research uses participatory visual

methods to document and communicate

Inuit traditional knowledge and

storytelling regarding ocean social

ecological sustainability in Pangnirtung, Nunavut.

As Inuit, we live in the coastal areas.

We studied the land, we know the land.

That's our hunting area.

That's where we get our resources.

In summer 2016, we documented two fishing expeditions in Pangnirtung,

one of which was commercial and the other subsistence.

In both cases, we documented local perspectives and

visual representations of how the Pangnirtung

fishery dynamically supports both

economic development and traditional livelihoods.

Most of us go out to go get some food

like seals, belugas, and fish just to provide the family.

We know it is important for us. We get to have

our meals from these waters and it's our traditional way of life.

Regardless if other fishers are monetizing their catch,

our analysis of visuals, interviews, and experiential learning

shows that the equipment, techniques, and associated

knowledge remains similar and that it is

locally focused, small-scale and inherently sustainable.

Moving forward, my Master's research will partner with the Pangnirtung

Youth Centre to explore art and video workshops

as a tool to engage both youth and elders

and document local perspectives of changing ocean dynamics.

Its very important for youth to get involved

with doing activities with elders and

talk about what their thoughts are on

how life is today and how it was back in the day.

This research will help facilitate intergenerational knowledge exchange

between others and youth, while also visualizing local issues and solutions

that are important and relevant for Canada as a whole.
