at todays investigation, we visited a place that is not so famous like other places
concerning the paranormal activity recordings and urban myths
in the network there only few rumors from visitors that talks about screaming and chain sounds
This is our destination, Rafina, at the Bunker hill.
Only few things are known to the public besides the german fortifications on the hill.
a place that the german boot encroached and imposed its own law
the law of terrorism apply and blood sucking of the area.
like every conqueror does, every totalitarian regime.
Our team met at the bunker hill with mr. Makris
Mr Makris is a brilliant person that fights for the rescue of the local history
Mr. Makris as former athlete, holded the greek flag high, torchbearer in the Olympics in Munich in 1972
Today, again racing on the track of the rescue of history and folklore at the local area of Rafina
Here at the area of the bnker hill, we have findings from the prehistoric periods of the ancient greek civilization
something that even the local citizens here they did not knew about it.
until the German occupation came here in 1st of May 1941 and captured the hill and started the fortifications
during the fortification works, μany ancient findings were destroyed,
while there are testimonials from locals, that Germans looted this place.
many ancient artifacts, not only from here but from other areas in Greece,
has been transfered to German museums or private collections
Here we have a tragic story, for me this place is not an attraction
this place hides great pain and tragic events at the time of the German occupation.
stories about arrests, prisoners, tortures, executions, and betrayals.
This the way that we should see this place. as a sad memorial and not a turist attraction.
When i come here with students, the first thing i say, is that here we have the history of the ancient greeks
this is the important thing we firstly must focus on and secondarly of what the Germans left here behind them.
So the new generations will learn their history correct, and be able to reach at right conclusions.
Today many new citizens came here at Rafina,
and it is sad that they are not familiar with the history of the place.
Personally I have been involved finding sources from older historians
but also record the witnesses of the people that lived the events
from the people who worked here to build the fortifications, of what exactly was here.
which most of it is still burried underground and do not know about it.
concerning the ancient times, we must emphasize to the people and the younger people
that they should be proud of what was here, not only at the bunker hill but also the surrounding area.
here is burried a civilization organized and evolved that almost nobody knows about it.
my research starts back since 1962 trying to record and identify every finding i had.
and later until the year 2000 and with the assistance of archaiologists
we record the findings to save and highlight the to the public.
we must highlight this unknown civilization to the public. We must save it and highlight it.
at the begining of the year 1941, at the town of Rafina were thousands of
New Zealanders and Australians Alliance Ranking of the English expeditionary force
in 18th of April, all New Zealanders and Australians were transferred to Crete with ships and submarines..
30th of April also the British leave, leaving behind them hundreds of cars motorcycles, clothes etc.
1st of May 1941, Germans occupies Rafina.
Citizens were afraid and stayed locked inside their homes.
Only the priest of the town, and a Nazi friendly person stayed on the entrance of the town to see the Germans comming
the Germans immediately intensificate structures and houses that was useful to them
the same afternoon the Germans gather all the citizens of town to main square
and said to them, that are friends of the greek people, that they know and respect the history of the Greeks.
but also the same time they call them to obey ito their orders.
The occupations forces at the beggining consists from Austrians and few Germans,
after 3 weeks Austrians have been sent to the east front and their place took german and italian troops.
they also camp at the hill, today known as bunker hill.
the hill of the bunker, was and still is a piney area of 300 acres
today bunker belongs to the municipality of Rafina.
The Germans immediately starts the fortification works
They use Greek contractors and enlist workers from Rafina
also from other areas, Nea Makri, Marathon, and Mesogia.
they released announcement saying that all men by age 16 to 60 years old that must work at the bunker at least one day a week
whoever refuses the order will be executed.
Germans gave the workers one piece of black bread
a handful of raisins and nuts and more rarely a canned
to share between 6 people.
from the order were excluded workers from the coal mines
They have orders that intensificate the coal mines
and from now on the coal will be used only for their own needs
they forbid the usage of coal to the workers in the mines
and mining should be continued 24 hours a day
The fort included ditches of several kilometers
in and out of it, creating connections between them.
Five cannon bases on the east side of the hill
the cannons turned arround 270 degrees
their range was able to hit targets at the coast line of Euboea
the cannon brought Germans from the Maginot line, France
at the top of the hill were base two gun turrets and one observatory tower.
at the hills periphery more than ten gun turrets supervised the area.
the greatest volume of the turrets construction is underground
on the surface were many wooden constractions
at the depth of 15 meters tunnels have been made to connect all the gun turrets
also was a labyrith of operational places
ammunition depot, examination room, bedrooms, farmacy etc.
the ammunition was transferred to the gun turrets with small vagons on trails.
beside the wooden constractions on the surface
All other structures were concrete from half to one meter thick.
What is realy sad, is the fact the citizen after the order of the German commander
to work in forced labor with a small piece of bread
in good days they gave also a canned to share 6 people. in order to keep some strength and keep up the labor
and with lashes they were still pushing them to work more.
at this point here we are now, the capture as prisoners 80 to 100 people from the surrounding areas.
i dont have any evidence if they did any executions here at the bunker
until now, because the investigation is still in progress
but in other places arround suffered from terrorism, looting, tortures, executions
So, here someone can say it was a site of tortures and interrogations rather than executions
not only here, interrogations were doing everywhere, even at the police station also.
almost everywhere, for example at Pikermi, at Kalergis villa,
germans had interrogation headquarters that moved to arrests and tortures of civilians
that was an every day routine everywhere...
but i assume that Germans avoided to bring people here for interrogations
because were afraid for information leaks about this place to allied forces
because it was a bombardment from the Royal Air Force here,
but none of the bombs hit the bunker. Most of them dropped in the sea in spring of 1944
because it was night and had limited informations about this place
the area around the fort was secured with landmines and anti-tank mines
Nazis also have been organized also in other sectors
they created a spy ring with the assistance of some greek traitors
and scattered them between the civilians in every possible site, hospitals, mines, trade market etc.
until February of 1942, life was tollerable
arrests always been made and interrogation of patriots
blocks and bullying of the civilians was always present
but without any tortures or prisoner executions.
after the establishment of E.A.M. (National Liberation Front) things have changed
there were two organizations of the National Liberation Front
one composed from the mine workers, and the second from the greek immigrands of Asia Minor
The miners created also an armed wing the ELAS. And had an intense presence immediately
Germans often do roadblock in Rafina, but not carrying out executions
even though that the miners provoked them openly by saying that they will fight them untill whole Greece is free again.
Now Germans threatens everybody with executions
12 pf July they ambush an enemy convoy near Pikermi area,
to hurt the prestige of the German army they hit them on Marathon Avenue
a check point that was controlled and guarded by strong german forces.
Germans accounts three dead soldiers and the garrison commander of the fort
the news caused panic to all the civilians of the surrounding areas.
most of them abandon their homes and leave on the near mount of Penteli.
Germans for 5 days do not react
only some local arrests have been made.
they torture people in order to retrieve informations about the leadership of E.A.M.
But they had also another plan on the back side.
after 5 days of silence, the go out and deal death from Pallini up to Marathon.
fights around the Penteli mountain with the rebels have been made
they forbid to burry the dead for 20 days
the hot sun burns the dead flesh, jackals and crows scatters the dead flesh everywhere.
Nazis are showing their brutality
Athenians after the battle of Marathon, buried the 6500 dead Medes,
and as Pausanias, the ancient greek historian wrote...
meaning: Athenians buried the Persians because this is the divine law dead should be covered under earth.
