A video of the British coastline is going viral for 2 reasons, number one because its
brilliantly made, and number 2 because it is literally the most annoying video you have
ever seen in your life.
More on this today on IO.
Welcome back to inform overload where we talk about viral trends.
I'm Charlotte Dobre.
A video, that's actually a gif is being shared all over social media and its being
called, the most annoying video on the internet.
The video begins to zoom in on a satellite image of a coast line.
Your brain makes you think you're going to see a closer view of the coast, but In
actuality, the video is on a 2 second loop.
I know I spent a good 30 seconds staring at it before I felt physically sick.
So what the heck is going on with this gif?
Firstly, This is what you would call a fractal, but in gif form.
Fractals are curves or geometric figures, where each part has the same statistical character
as the whole.
A good example of a fractal is a snowflake, where similar patterns reoccur at smaller
and smaller scales, and as the crystals in the snowflake grow, they continue growing
in similar patterns.
There are many examples of fractals in nature, and their main characteristic is something
called self-similarity.
Self similarity is where you can zoom in on a part of a fractal and you'll see the same
structure repeated over and over again.
The term fractal was first coined in 1975 by a mathematician named Benoit Mandelbrot.
And number 2, We are also all being fooled by something called the coastline paradox.
According to IFL science, The coastline paradox states that the coastline of an island doesn't
have a well-defined length.
This is because the measurement of the length of a coastline depends specifically on the
units used to measure it.
here's an example.
If you're using units of 100 kilometers, the main British isle is 28 hundred kilometers
or 17 hundred miles.
But if you use a 50 kilometer ruler, the main isle gains around 600 kilometers or 373 miles.
Depending on your unit of measurement, the length of a coastline will be different.
Combine fractals plus the coastline paradox, and you get the most annoying gif on the internet.
The gif was made by an artist, felix konczakowski who has over 430 million views on his giphy
page.
CharliBaltimore – Charlotte you are so darn cute.
You remind me of my oldest granddaughter, smart girl and a good sense of humor.
Aw thanks charli that's very nice of you to say.
Grace sentongo – hey Charlotte are you high on potatoes.
I don't think so.
Hailthegods – you look like some cult leader or something.
I mean yeah.
I am leader of potato.
The video is over!
