Hi everybody. One of the biggest things I want you to get out of chapter one in our
Intro to Soc text is the fact that there are three different theoretical
perspectives of sociology. And this is something that some students have a
little bit of problem with. So I thought I'd explain them in my own words for you.
These three theories, and remember now theories are just some people's opinion,
their speculation, how they see something.Theories are neither right nor wrong. If
I say what is your theory of God, or what is your theory of humankind, or what is
your theory in terms of what's going on with the presidency right now, you would
state your opinion to me and that opinion wouldn't either be right nor
wrong. It would simply be your opinion. So that's what theories are. The first theory
we're going to look at is going to be symbolic interactionist. And Symbolic
Interactionist Theory is the most abstract theory. But what it does is it
looks at what the item really means, the symbol of what things mean, and how that
symbol allows us to interact with others. For example, some people might see
abortion as a choice. Others might see it as something that's wrong. So how are
these two people going to interact if they have a debate about abortion?
Obviously they're going to butt heads. Correct? Okay. Love. What if some people
see love as merely having passion for a partner, while others see love as just
having a cognitive commitment to the other. Neither one are wrong. It's just
different in how they see it. If I were to paint my house red, and then white, and
then blue, to you guys that would symbolize that I'm very patriotic. But to
somebody in another country, it may just be she used the colors red, and then
white, and then blue. Some people think abuse is when you purposefully inflict
pain, while others think it's just the absence of violence and anything else is
acceptable. So for symbolic interactionism, just remember it's not
the thing that needs to be studied. It's the meaning under the thing. Now in
Functional Analysis, our second theoretical perspective, it sees society
as a puzzle, and everything in society is a piece of that puzzle. And all of those
pieces work together to make a whole. Right? If you take out one piece of a
thousand-piece puzzle, you're still going to see that gap even though there's
still 999 other puzzle pieces there. Ok? If you change one puzzle piece, if you
cram in one puzzle piece or change that one puzzle piece, it'll change the rest
of the puzzle. So in Functional Analysis, everything in our society has
a purpose, and you change that one purpose you've changed everything. That's
why sometimes change is difficult. We know what we want to do, but we also know
that if we make this change, there could be lasting effects. Now the
last theoretical perspective is Conflict Perspective. This means that we see
various groups in our society competing for resources or being in conflict.
Genders, races, different ethnic groups, political groups, etcetera. Now, the good thing
about Conflict Perspective is that it allows us to have two different
perspectives. Okay? It allows us to see things from one end of the spectrum to
the other. That's a good thing. Conflict is also a good thing because it can
bring about positive change, like my example here with Rosa Parks. What she
did was extremely brave. It was a catalyst to, you know, a couple decades of
civil rights issues where people got killed and people got hurt. But, the
lasting effect is that we have a country that is more
equal. There's still a long ways to go, but more equal than it used to be. Now,
there's also a downside to this in that sometimes groups get so caught up in
their own agendas, they can't look outside of that agenda. Okay?
So really study those three theoretical perspectives, and I think you'll really
grasp a lot more of what we'll talk about in our class this semester. Bye!
