hey guys it's danielle and happy earth
day so I was pregnant with my son about
five years ago and I started looking
into cloth diapering solely for the cost
savings benefit but I guess as I started
learning a little bit more I realized
hey not only is it's going to save us
some money but it's much better for the
environment and much better for my son's
health so that kinda got me started on
my journey of trying to be a little more
conscious and I've slowly implemented
some changes and today I'm going to
share some of you that needs a trifecta
so better for the environment better for
your and your family's health and better
for your pocketbook so I hope you enjoy
and we're going to start out with these guys
okay first we'll focus on the laundry I
use crystal wash balls to wash my
clothes this is instead of detergent
this is all over YouTube so if you don't
know much about it there will be plenty
of YouTube videos that you can search
and will explain it better than me but
we use a clean your clothes without
detergent if you do want to use
detergent you can use a little bit and
still use these so if you can use them
together but I usually just use these
i've used them for more than a year now and i
love them they last three years so i
don't have to buy laundry detergent for
three years they're biodegradable when
they're done and all you have to do is
charge them by putting them in the Sun
every three weeks so it's a great option
and I know a lot of people have your
skin irritated by detergents
and perfumes and this is obviously free
of all of that stuff so that's for
washing your clothes in the washer and
then instead of dryer sheets you can use
these wool dryer balls they do the
same thing as dryer sheets and they
actually help make your clothes dry
faster i think because of the agitation
that goes on a lot of people love dryer
sheets for the smell I honestly can't
stand that smell but if you want your
laundry to have a scent you can put some
essential oil on these I put about two
drops on each wool ball some people have
had problems with it staining so what I like
to do is kind of let the oil set for a
couple hours first or like use a load of
towels on them and then by the time you
want to wash your clothes it won't stain
them if lasts for quite a while
I would say four washes or so before you
need to add more and then one last thing
on the laundry front I talked about this
in my what's in my gym bag video which I
will link but this is a laundry bag so i
use it at the gym before i was using
like a plastic bag to put my dirty
clothes in and now i just put it in this
and then you just throw this in the
laundry with your clothes so it's no
extra work so like I said it's great for
me in the gym or for traveling that's
the great thing to bring along to reduce
that plastic waste
I stopped buying paper towels and
napkins I found that even if I was
trying to use cloth and I had paper in
the house I would use them so I kind of
just cut the cord completely so this is
what i use i guess in lieu of paper
towels it's a little messy right now so
I apologize but I just have this big
basket of towels in my kitchen cabinet
and then I'm doing laundry right now so
I don't have a lot of the napkins to
show you but these are just crappy
napkins I actually got it at like a
thrift store so they're stained and its
fine for our family to use those
napkins and then I do have fancier ones
for company that I use for when we have company
so these set under, you know my
kitchen cabinet and then i have this
basket and that's where I throw all the
dirty ones and I wash these about twice
a week which may seem like a lot but
it's honestly super easy and quick to
fold them and pop them in here as you
can see I don't do it perfectly so that
is another great tip instead of buying
plastic individual hand soap I have four
of these pretty glass bottles that i got from
target and I buy handsoap in bulk
then fill them myself to to reduce on
the plastic I think it looks so much nicer
you can also go to health food stores
and bring your own jar and buy hand soap
in bulk so you won't need to waste any plastic
i think this is a ms. meyers big refill that I got
from Target dr. bronner's and also a
great can be used for handsoap. I'm
unfortunately allergic to it but you can
buy those in big containers and you
only need to fill it up maybe like a
quareter of the way with soap and the rest with
water so that's a good option too and
then this is my everyday cleaner that
I use. I buy a huge bottle of vinegar so
again reducing the plastic and I fill it
about half way with vinegar and the rest
with water you can use this almost
anywhere you can't use it on ...um
granite sorry granted i
would check with whatever your kitchen
counter is before you use it but I
use it on basically everything we don't
have granite in our house right now. Um, the smell
doesn't bug me it does dry without any
scent at all it doesn't bug me but it really
bugs my husband so I add essential oil
this will help boost the cleaning effect
too. I found that citrus essential oils
really helps cut down on the smell so
I've been loving this citrus fresh I
think it's young living my sister and I got
me this for Christmas
excuse my oven beeping in the background
but this is great it reduces plastic
waste and it's just it doesn't have the
harsh chemicals that are going to affect
the environment in nor in the family's
health so i highly recommend giving this a try
to try one last thing if you do add
essential oil it's good to have a
non-transulsent bottle this is an
amber bottle the light can damage the
essential oils ok this is the last
category i guess food and snack so
instead of buying the individual you
know small single serving yogurt cups I
put together my own yogurt cups for my
son and for me and he i will say is a
super picky eater unfortunately and he
loves these so all I do is I put frozen
fruit on the bottom here are blueberries
and then this is just plain whole milk
yogurt that i buy in this big size so i
can make a bunch of them with you know
just one thing and like i said my son is
picky but especially if you buy frozen
fruit the juices are all going to flow
and mix in and it is sweet enough for
him other things that I've done before
is add honey to make like a honey yogurt
or you can add vanilla extract to make a
vanilla yogurt and so obviously it's a
lot cheaper better for the environment
and its way healthier for you a lot of
those you know yogurts that you buy
individually have a ton of added
sugar and dyes and flavors and
this is pretty much as natural as you
can get and then I showed this in my
what's in my carry-on bag but this is a
little snack bag that you can reuse so
if I make my son a sandwich or
whatever i'll use this instead of the
ziplock plastic bags which can really
add up these wash super easily usually I
just turn them inside out and wash them
with some hand dish soap and let them dry
I also put them in the laundry if they
get really bad. I think I have two or three of
these and then if you do use ziplock
you can often reuse them so for instance
instead of buying granola bars I make my
own at home. I do put them in the
plastic little ziplock like snack bags
but I reuse them and I eventually have
to throw them away but I at
least get a couple lives out of them so
this is again snacks and food thank you
so much for watching I would so appreciate it
if you gave this video a thumbs up and
subscribed see you next time
