Hi Everyone! Welcome back. I'm Di and
today I'm bringing you my December
Wrap-Up. December was kind of a slow
reading month for me, not because I
didn't enjoy the things that I was
reading, but i just did not feel like
reading. I did craft a bit more and I was
watching a lot of television and anime
and so I just enjoyed doing what I felt
like doing. I didn't really put any
pressure on myself to read but I'm going
to hope to keep this short and sweet
since there aren't that many things. I
read six things. Two of them were novels,
one of them was a novella, and three of
them are volumes of manga - all from same
series. So let's get started. The first
thing I read was Flip that Haunted
House. This is the first book in the
Haunted Renovation Mystery series by
Rose Pressey. I was introduced to Rose
Pressey on Facebook. She had actually
sent me a friend request and I'm not
quite sure how that came about, but I've
been following her for a while. I do have
some of her other books from other
series but I never picked up any of them
until now. This is actually a selection
for my book club which is the First in a
Series Cozy Mystery Book Club or
#Book1CoziesClub. I really enjoyed this!
I picked up a Kindle copy and I splurged
on the Audible audiobook companion and
it was just a really enjoyable read. It
wasn't too deep there was not a love
triangle - and you know that I have had a
little bit of an issue with love
triangles in my cozy mysteries towards
the end of the year - but this one did not
have one.
There's not one in sight. The mystery was
interesting. I had no idea who the
culprit was and it
just had enough paranormalness to it to
keep me interested in it. This one
follows Alabama Hargrove. She is kind of
career jumping. She has decided now that
she wants to be a house flipper. She gets
a really good deal on this house and
turns out that the house she buys is
haunted.
It just so happens that one of her side
hobbies is to investigate haunted houses.
She actually - and a couple friends - do
investigations, you know like ... like those
TV shows where the people go in at night
and they have their cameras and they
have meters to read different types of
paranormal activity. That's the kind of
thing that she likes to do as a hobby so
this is right down her alley. Just so
happens that the person that she buys
the house from gets murdered.
She's actually the one that finds the
original owner's body and so she kinda
wants to know who killed him but it's
not the, like the main focus of this
story for her.
The main part of this story is to get
the house renovated so that she can flip
it. Again, I really enjoyed this one.
It does have a sequel. I think there's
only one other book in the series so far.
I'm definitely interested in reading
that one and I will be checking out Rose
Pressey's other novels in the future. I
ended up giving this one 4 stars. Then I
read Summerfall, which is the prequel
novella to Winterspell (by Claire Legrand). l'm not quite
sure how this ties into Winterspell. I
am reading it right now and I'm about
thirty percent in and I'm still not
really sure how it connects but i'm sure
it will.
This one is a lot
more about the Fae and humans and
their relationships and some politics as
well between the human race and the
Fae Realm. So I really enjoyed that. I
don't see any connection to the
Nutcracker story at all. Winterspell is
supposed to be a Nutcracker retelling.
I'm still really curious to see how this
story is going to fit into Winterspell
since as of right now I don't see any
kind of connection. I did really enjoy
Summerfall as a story on its own. I
think if you weren't interested in
Winterspell at all, you could definitely
pick up Summerfall as a standalone and
if you like stories about Fae and humans
with some political intrigue, I
definitely recommend this one. I ended up
giving this one 5 stars. Then I participated
in the Harry Christmas To You Read-a-thon
which is a month-long read-a-watch-
a=thon of the Harry Potter series in
December. This is my second year
participating as a member of Ravenclaw
house. I started off on the book that I
left off on last yea,r which was Harry
Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I had
actually started this one in 2015 but I
didn't get to finish it before the
read-a-thon was over. So this year I
decided to pick it up again. I started
from the beginning and read the entire
thing in the month December. I always
say that this one is not my favorite of
the series but that doesn't mean that I
don't really enjoy the reading
experience of it. I always skip over this
one when i do a re-read and I really
shouldn't. There were a lot of things
that I was able to refresh my memory on,
several things that I had forgotten
about, and I really enjoyed being back in
this world. Obviously I gave this one 5
stars again and I am looking forward to
continuing with Goblet of Fire. The last
three things I read in December were
three volumes of manga from the series
Hell Girl. This is by Miyuki Eto. I read
volumes two, three, and four. This one
follows a girl named Ai Enma and is the
Hell Girl. It's kind of a compilation
of short stories that revolve around
this urban legend of the Hell Girl. They
say that if there's someone that is
bullying you or treating you really
badly and the only way to get them out
of your life is to have them dragged down
the hell, you go onto the Hell Girl website
at midnight, type the name in and the
Hell Girl will drag them to hell for you.
The caveat to that is if you do this, you
will also be sent to hell when you die.
Each one of these volumes contains about
five or six, I think, stories.
Obviously you know pretty much how the
story is going to go in regards to the
overall ending. Sometimes there's a
surprise,
sometimes it's just the same. More often
than not the outcome is the same but the
way that the person is tortured in hell
is different every time because it
depends on what they had done during
their lifetime.
I can't say that I enjoy this series
because it's not stories that are meant
to be enjoyable but it is very
interesting and the artwork is very
beautiful. I am going to continue this
one and I'll probably get back into the
anime. I did watch a couple episodes from
the first series several years ago which
is how I
became familiar with this series and so
I do plan on going back to that one.
I'm going to continue this series and I
gave each of these volumes four stars. So
that's all that I read in the month of
December. Let me know if you've read any
of these or if you participated in the
Harry Christmas To You read-a-watch-a-thon
and let me know what house you were
in if you did participate.
I hope you're all doing great and until
next time, Take Care and Smi-Le Always.
Bye!
