Hi everyone, it's Lily and today I'm
going to be doing a book haul. So these are
all the books that I got for my birthday,
some books I just randomly forgot to
haul, some books i got for christmas
some books that I got myself for Christmas.
So, I'm just going to get into it, there's
about 14 books and we just need to get
through this.
So the first bookI have to talk about
I got just before I went to university,
and I didn't have time to haul it and I
didn't take it with me to university so
i couldn't haul it there. And that book is
The Outrun by Amy Liptrot. I had seen
this book around Waterstones a little
bit, and then Lizzie from sewmanybooks,
whos channel i will link down below.
She recommended this book and it is
basically a Nature Memoir. So it is about
Amy Liptrot
who's going through quite a lot of stuff in
the lead-up to her 30th birthday and i
think around that time she went back
home to the Orkney Islands which are
these islands off the coast of Scotland
in the north, and it's about her like
reconnecting with nature and healing and
it sounds really really good. I've seen a
few people like reading it out and about
and I really love this cover. I just picked it
up on a recommendation because I'm
trying to expand my reading and I've
never read anything like this before. And
another book I just picked up randomly
at University was The Sun is Also a Star
by Nicola Yoon. So this came out in early November
and I think I got it around then. This is a
YA Contemporary novel about two teenagers
Natasha and Daniel, who meet on the same day
that Natasha is to be deported back to
Jamaica. And this follows them falling in
love over 12 hours but it also talks
about the immigrant experience. I've
already done a reading recap where I
talk about this book, cause I've already read it,
which i will link on the screen.
I didn't like the romance, but I still
think that this book is worth a read and
talks about some really important topics
and I'm really glad that this book
exists. Next we have the books I picked
up when i went to New York. So I went to
New York my 21st birthday which was
amazing and thank you to my parents
that was great. Whilst I was there I got a few
books I couldn't pick up in the UK or I
just had trouble getting hold of and I
really wanted to get. One of the books I
picked up there was The Round House
by Louise Erdrich. This is a book set on a
reservation, so it has three main
characters who are Native American. I
believe it's kind of like a crime
mystery thriller kind of book. I've heard
really good things about her books, and
this one just sounded really interesting
and i really loved the cover. This is an
#ownvoices novel and I just love US
floppy paperbacks, they're great.
This also won the National Book Award which
is amazing so, very excited to read this.
I then got Under A Painted Sky by Stacey Lee.
I saw this on Jen from BookSyrup's
channel who I will also linked down below. She
was talking about this in one of her
diverse books videos. And so this is
a historical fiction novel, set
around 1849 I think. It follows two main
characters, one is chinese-american and one
is an escaped slave and they are
basically making their way across
America. I think they're going to
California on the Oregon Trail or Oregon on
the Oregon Trail, I don't know. I don't
know too much about that bit of American
history.
This just follows them on the trail as
they're disguised as boys and I've heard
really good things about it and i really
want to read Stacy Lee's books, and this
one really appealed to me because its
historical fiction and its diverse
historical fiction which is amazing. And
I really like the cover and I'm excited. I
the picked up When The Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie
McLemore. This is a magical realism
novel i believe, that features a queer main
character and a trans main character. And I
don't know too much about it other than that. I've just
heard really really good things. Oh, I also
think the characters are Latinx, I'm not sure,
about that though, I think they are. And I've
just heard amazing things about it.
Everyone's been raving about this book,
and raving about Anna-Marie McLemore's
books so I thought I'd pick it up.
It's pretty short, I'm definitely gonna be
reading this is as part of diversity bingo.
And it's just really pretty and
I'm really excited. And then because I'm
really extra, I was in Books of Wonder
which is a beautiful book shop by the way
if you're ever in New York, go to Books of Wonder
because it has a beautiful children's section
and a beautiful YA section. Even though I had a
copy of this book,
that I'd read, so I don't need this at all. And so I got
another copy of Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo.
But it has the red stained pages
which are so pretty. And also, this is the
best bit. I really wanted to go to a
signing with Leigh Bardugo,
but she wasn't, she didn't come to my area when she
came to the UK. And it's signed! And also ...
... it's just, it's such a pretty book.
and i spent way too much money on it
considering i already own the book
in another copy, but i have zero regrets.
because it is stunning. And then another
book I just randomly ordered because i
wanted it,
is Of Fire and Stars by Audry Coulthurst.
This is was one of my most anticipated
releases of the year. So this is a
fantasy novel following two princesses.
There is Dennaleia who is from a neighboring
kingdom, she goes to Mynaria and she is
betrothed to the Prince there, and she's
eventually gonna be Queen one day but
then she ends up falling in love with
his sister instead. I'll let you guys know my
thoughts when I've finished it and it's
just it's a book I've been wanting for a
really long time and i was really excited
to get it. Now we're moving on to my
Christmas books. I actually didn't get too
many like Christmassy books from my
parents. I didn't ask for a lot of books. One
of the books I did get from my parents for
Christmas is Milk and Honey by Rupi
Koah, Kaur, I haven't figured this out yet
i'm really sorry. This is a book of
poetry and it talks about heartbreak and
abuse and feminism and learning to love
yourself and self-love and I read it on
christmas day it was really really good.
I really enjoyed it. I don't know if i
loved it as much as other people did. I
really love the last section, it's split up
into four section, so like the last section
was like five stars,
favorite book of the year for me. But the rest
was like okay. Next I participated in the
#SundayYA Secret Santa, so #SundayYA is a
a twitter chat that i sometimes
participate in. And a book that i got
from My Secret Santa was The Lie
Tree by Frances Hardinge. This won the
Costa book award .. last year, it won the Costa
book award last year. It's just had a lot of
hype, I really don't know what it's about.
I know it's about like a father-daughter
relationship and it's supposed to be
really atmospheric and really well
written and it looks quite creepy.
So this looks interesting. Thank you to
Steph, who was my Secret Santa for sending this to me.
Next I got, I kind of like to think of it as a
little Christmas present from Walker
Books.
Basically I requested this book because
it is one of my most anticipated
releases of 2017 and I'm just so excited
that I got it. And it is Wing Jones.
I've known Katherine Webber, bascially
since i joined the Bookish community
because she's one of the first people that
followed me and she's just so nice. She's
chaired a lot of the events i've been to.
And she is just lovely and, look at how
pretty it is. Look at those stained pages! Look
at that! Look at it!
So this is a book set in Atlanta in 1995 and it is
about a biracial main character called
Wing Jones. Who basically has always been
living in the shadow of her brother and
then her brother gets into a car
accident where he's put into a coma and he kills
some people and she's dealing with a lot.
And she basically turns to running to
sort of help her with her problems and
she finds out that she's actually very
good at running. And I believe this might
have a bit of magical realism in it. I'm
just so excited for this book I've been
hearing about for so long and I love
Katie and I was there for the cover
reveal like YALC. So this is going to be
my next read after I finish Of Fire
and Stars, so look out for review of this
book soon.
Next I just felt like treating myself, I
got an Amazon gift card from my brother for
Christmas which of course means buying
books. And all of these books are diverse, they're
all #ownvoices i believe. And i can use
some of them for diversity bingo, so i
wanted to get them anyway. So the first
book, literally I've been eyeing it
for like, since it came out and that is
If I was Your Girl by Meredith Russo.
This is a book about girl called Amanda who is
transgender and she, I think starts at a new
school in Tennessee and it's all about
just her and acceptance. I think there's a
romance in here as well, I know its #own
voices and I've had amazing things about
this book. I'm really really excited to
read it.
Everyone raves about it and I haven't
actually read a book featuring a
transgender main character which really
needs to change. So I'm really excited to
have this. The next book I got is going
to be a book that I read for my Bookish
Brits Challenge. I'm trying to start
acquiring some of the books because i have a
few but i need to get 12 so I picked this
one up. And that is Refugee Boy Benjamin
Zephaniah. Benjamin Zephaniah is an author
i've been hearing of since I was a kid but
I've never actually read his work. He's quite
renowned here in the UK. This about
a boy called Alem. He's visiting London with
his family, he's from Ethiopia and then
basically I think he wakes up in the
morning and his parents have left him. They've gone
back to Ethiopia but they left him in
London because the political situation
in Ethiopia is very fraught and they don't
want him to get mixed up in that. And so
he then gets put into like the refugee
system and it's all about him trying to
cope with that. So I'm really excited to
read this, I haven't really read a whole lot of books
about characters who are refugees or have been
displaced so this looks really good. And
the last book that I got in that
order is Georgia Peaches and Other
Forbidden Fruit by Jaye Robyn Brown. This is a
YA contemporary novel about a girl
called ... Georgia i believe. And she's from
Atlanta and she's very openly gay even though
father is this like very renowned minister.
And then they move to a small town and
her father basically asks her to be
closeted because obviously like in
small-town where there's quite a lot of
people who aren't very open-minded. But
Georgia kind of have plans of her own.
I've just heard this is a really adorable,
cute, YA contemporary. I haven't read
like a really cute adorable F/F book in a
while and I just really wanted to have
one of my shelf. I'm probably gonna read this
soon because I'm just feeling like I
need something like that. It deals with
like sexuality and its relation to
religion and it just sounds like it explores
some really good topics whilst also being
really cute and fluffy. And then the final book
that i got for christmas was from my parents
I feel very very lucky to have got this.
So I got the illustrated edition of
the chamber of secrets but a signed
first edition. Now don't get excited it's not
signed by JK Rowling but it is signed by
Jim Kay, who is like a really famous
renowned illustrator so I'm still really
hyped about it. I'm keeping it in this
wrapping because it's precious. I don't know if you guys
can see but it's signed!
Uh, I'm so excited! I'm just really excited
that I own this. Ok guys that is all the
books that I've got in sort of the last two
months or so. Let me know if you guys
have read any of these books and what
you thought about them.
I hope you guys are all doing really well and
i'll see you soon in another video.
Bye!
