Ok, so today's leadership image is from
Seth Godin. It's the bird and the cage.
The normal thing I think about.... it might
be from Seth Godin. It might be from
somewhere else. I've seen a great Suli Speaks
or SuliBreaks Youtube. His
Youtube channel. He told the story. I saw
that video months ago. I'll link that below.
The bird and the cage. Whenever I think
about the bird and the cage, the main thing
that comes to mind is the parrot yelling,
"Freedom!" like it's afraid and it wants to
leave the cage. That's the first thing I
think about and that's normally I think
what everybody else thinks about.
The idea of a calling, of freedom, of
leaving where you are for someplace
better.
The grass is always greener on the other
side. I talked about that yesterday, but
there's another side to that. Of the
inverted u-curve, there's the side of, "I
want to leave," and there's also the side
of, "I want to stay." And the bird isn't
yelling because it wants freedom; the
birds yelling because it's afraid of
freedom. There's a fear of freedom. A
fear of tension. A fear of challenge.
That's fascinating. I don't have a lot of
conversations about that, but I have a
lot of conversations about, "I need to go
somewhere else to accomplish something."
So with the the grass is greener
idea, I think on the inverted u-curve
burning out isn't great to do, but
complacency on the other hand, doing
nothing while the world changes around
you, that isn't always the best thing to
do either. So there is a middle ground
just like the inverted u-curve.
There's a way where we can lean toward
the edge, where we can flinch forward.
That's another one! There's so many habit
metaphors, but I'm thinking about habits
recently with the new year and
overriding bad habits with better ones.
That's something that I am working on
right now, especially with this. So that's
the bird in the cage.
That's the idea for that one. Face the
uncertainty and realize sometimes that
risky is safer,
It sounds bizarre, risky being safer, but
to change with the times and to
challenge yourself and to constantly
grow with what's happening....that is often
a safer path then burning out. Or.... maybe
flinching toward burning out is safer
than complacency.
I guess it depends on situations. Again
this is very nuanced, and it's always nuanced
and that's the point talking about
nuance things.
Keep being you, DFTBA, see you tomorrow. Everybody Palka!
What do you think? Let me know your
thoughts below. Bird in the cage. When you
hear that, when you first hear that, what
comes to mind? Does freedom come to mind
or does the fear of freedom come to mind and
complacency on the other end of that
curve? See you tomorrow!
