[MUSIC PLAYING]
[NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
Congratulations to all of you.
This is a big deal, as a very famous person once said.
You're going on to another phase of your life.
But you've been at a great university, Montclair State
University, under a great president, Dr. Cole,
and a great staff selected to help you move
to the next stage of your life.
I want you to know how proud I am of you, each
and every one of you.
You're not a pebble on a beach.
This is something very, very important.
We live in a very complex society,
and you are being trained to address it, to be part of it,
and to be leaders.
I salute you all.
I salute your families, your loved ones,
because they've been with you.
They've been supportive of you, regardless of which field
you're in, regardless of what area of study you've been.
Been there and done that.
And I can tell you, this experience
will remain with you for the rest of your lives.
So congratulations, smile, and have some fun.
And remember, there's serious business to be done out there.
Take care.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
Hi.
It's Cory Booker, and I want to say thank you
for giving me a moment to say a few words to the graduates
of Montclair State University.
This is truly a time worthy of celebration.
Not just to each of you individually, but collectively,
we in Jersey, we at Montclair State,
continue to produce graduates ready to go out and take
on the world.
To contribute, to serve, to lead, to make
our world a better place.
Each and every one of you has to understand
that this day has been decades and decades in the making.
Many people before you conspired to give you this platform
so that you could press forward with your skills,
your hard work, and I know it was hard
work to get to this day of graduation.
I just want to commend all the graduates,
to thank you for coming to this moment,
and just to tell you that I believe in me.
Now more than ever, this world needs its leaders.
It needs its youth.
It needs people committed to the ideals
of citizenship and patriotism.
This understanding that this country is not secure.
We must in every generation secure our freedoms
and our privileges and our liberties,
and recommit ourselves to our values.
We are a great nation, not because of our wealth,
not because of our buildings or our businesses.
We're a great nation because we are
a people who are committed to high values of service,
of goodness, of compassion, of love.
Patriotism, ultimately love of country,
means loving each and every one of our citizens.
We don't always have to agree or get along,
but we have to be committed to this idea.
Love, an action verb, that we will be
agents of love in this world.
May you all answer the calling of your country.
May you serve.
May you give.
May unite people across differences.
And help us to be better adherents to the values
that we preach in our founding songs and our founding pledges.
May you help to make this nation one, even greater,
with liberty and justice for all.
The best to you all.
May you have great success.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
Congratulations Montclair State University class of 2017.
You're all sitting here today because you've earned it.
You've spent the last four, or five, or six,
or sometimes seven years pursuing your passions,
not only for the betterment of yourself,
but to the benefit of your community and our country.
Our country thrives when you go into the world and use what
you've learned here at Montclair State
to improve the lives of others.
I was the first in my family to attend college,
rising from living in a poor tenement in Union City
to becoming one of 100 United States senators.
I've never forgotten that I was able to succeed because
of the teachers, families, schools, and public services
that helped me along the way.
You've all overcome your own obstacles,
whether you are the first in your family
to graduate from college, faced difficult personal or family
circumstances, or simply struggled
to make important decisions about what to study and pursue
professionally.
There will be many more obstacles to come.
But never doubt your ability to persevere
through hard work, dedication, and a network of friends
and family to support you.
If you do that, some of you will go on
to be innovators, entrepreneurs, educators, scientists, artists,
journalists, or perhaps even United States senators.
There's no telling where you may end up.
And everything won't always play out exactly
as you thought it would.
Be open to opportunity, however it presents itself.
Don't be afraid to take risks, develop new skills,
and pursue avenues that you've never considered before.
After all, a Redhawk knows how to seize the day.
Carpe diem.
