Hi my name is Martina, and I live in Tokyo, Japan.
Today I'm going to talk about onigiri.
*enter serious music*
The word onigiri translated directly from Japanese, means:
"delicious, and magical f*cking rice ball,
filled with love and memories."
You can look it up.
The onigiri is a basic rice snack.
I like to think of it as a Japanese sandwich.
*ADORABLE SHAKING NOISES*
And in the same way a sandwich can range from mediocre...
UGH SO GROSS
To the marvellous.
Snotty voice: "do you have any Grey Poupon?"
That is a great looking sandwh-----
*silence fills the room*
Martina "ARE YOU EATING MY F*CKING SANDWICH!??"
No...
So too the onigiri can range from basic to bombastic.
Your most basic onigiri consists of steamed Japanese white rice,
and maybe some roasted seaweed.
The packaging is seriously ingenious!
The plastic keeps the seaweed off the rice until your ready to open it,
thus leaving you with perfectly crispy seaweed.
But not all are made with seaweed.
Some have slabs of bacon on top, or entire ramen eggs hidden inside of them.
If you are visiting Japan, be sure to visit different convenience stores,
because they all offer their own unique flavours.
Not to mention, seasonal flavours that come and go.
Tempura shrimp onigiri...I miss you...come back to me!
*GAME OVER SFX*
On top of all this magic rice ball goodness
the price is super cheap.
Onigiri will cost between $1.00 and $3.00
Some of my personal favourites include:
*cute salt shaker sounds*
Salted Salmon
Shrimp and mayonnaise. DO THAT EBI MAYO TANGOOOO BABY!
And probably the most popular is Sea Chicken.
"OHH YEAH CAPTAIN COCK IN THE HOUSE!"
"Look at me! I'm a Sea Chicken!"
No seriously. It is actually pronounced in Japanese as "She Chi-ken"
but in English we would just call it...Chicken and Mayonnaise.
The onigiri should not be mistaken for Korean Kimbap,
Kimbap: "안녕하세요!"
Onigiri: "こんにちは!"
Or Japanese maki rolls.
Maki roll: "こんにちは!"
They're all made from different ingredients, and taste quite different.
Don't get them confused, or else...
To me, onigiri isn't just the rice,
you remember the first time you opened the package,
You remember the first time you held the triangle,
You remember your first bite.
I remember having my first onigiri when I was 5 years old,
across the street at my neighbours house.
If you remember your first bite of an onigiri, let me know in the comment section below!
And let me know if you liked this video! I'm planning on doing a couple more,
and if you liked it, let me know because that would make me feel a lot happier...
because this...took forever guise!
Wow...was this video really that short? Cause....it was like a 10 hour day...
But anyways, it's fun right?
RIGHT!?
RIGHT!!!????
BEEEEEEEEEP!
*ENTER SUMO MUSIC*
Now while most onigiri are found in convenience stores in Japan,
There are also specialty shops where you can buy bigger, more bombastic onigiri!
