Hello, I'm Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack
and I want to welcome you as a new employee of USDA.
In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln founded
the Department of Agriculture as
the "People's Department."
Today, in the 21st century, that vision remains the same,
as the work that takes place here touches
the life of every American every day.
We work to support farmers and ranchers, and manage
millions of acres of forest and grasslands.
We help to feed hungry Americans and ensure that
the food families put on their kitchen tables is safe.
We conduct cutting edge research, and improve
the quality of soil our farmers till, of the water
our neighbors drink, and of the air we all breathe.
By investing in businesses and industries located
in rural America we create new economic opportunities
and help put people to work in jobs that support
rural families. By supporting hospitals, libraries, schools,
and broadband, we improve the quality-of-life
for Americans who live in rural communities.
I consider it a privilege to lead USDA.
Together, we have the opportunity
to make positive changes in the lives
of hundreds of millions of Americans.
Many of them won't be able to say thank you,
and may not even realize USDA is making a difference
in their lives. But you and I know how you can help make
America and the world a better place.
I hope, as time goes by, you will find
the same excitement and enjoyment as I do
working for this organization.
So congratulations on joining us.
I am pleased and honored that you have chosen
to become part of the People's Department.
I have touched briefly on the wide variety of things
we do at the Department of Agriculture - and I hope
that you'll take the time to learn more about
our various missions. But as you begin
your time at the Department I want to focus
on the extraordinary workforce that makes up USDA.
We are made up of over 100,000 Americans.
Our employees are stationed in more than 7,000 locations:
in nearly every county in America,
and over 90 nations across the globe.
Employees come to us from different backgrounds,
and education, skills, and perspectives.
We are proud of this diversity.
It's essential to performing our diverse
mission here at the Department.
Please take some time to get to know your fellow
USDA employees and the work they do.
We should treat all of our partners and customers
with respect and dignity - and that needs
to begin within the Department.
Know that I am very serious about building
an inclusive work environment,
free from discrimination or harassment of any kind.
As a new USDA employee, I am relying on you
to help build the USDA of the future.
You are a valued member of our organization.
No matter where you work or what special talents
you bring to USDA, I want you to receive proper training.
I want you to be fully engaged in your job.
And I challenge you to use your knowledge and skills
every day to be the best employee, team member,
customer service provider that you can be.
If you do, I know you'll contribute each day
to achieving the missions of this Department,
and position yourself as a future leader here at USDA.
Finally, I want to remind you that you'll
be serving USDA's customers during an historic period.
President Obama's administration marks
an exciting time in Federal service.
And we're making tremendous efforts
to build a strong foundation
for the future prosperity of this nation.
I am proud that you have chosen
to be a public servant here at USDA.
I am proud of the people of USDA
and our service to America.
Thank you again, for joining the People's Department,
a place where you can make a real difference.
