Waching daily Sep 27 2018

The Kickstarter project video is your way of putting a face to your project.

You know, you can write and explain why your project is important, and why it should get out into the world,

but people are really investing in you.

The most important thing isn't the quality of the project video in a traditional sense,

it's the personality of the video. It doesn't matter what it looks like. Make sure it sounds good.

Don't make farting sounds with your hands when you're talking to camera [laughs].

I think the video, maybe even the first 30 seconds of the video, is the most important part of how you're going to get fundraised.

Keep it short and sweet.

Plan ahead, write a script, practice it.

Who you are, what the project is, why it's important, and why people should be excited about it.

Try to outsource all of the things

that you don't do well to someone else.

The project videos that I like the best are just entertaining and fun to watch on their own.

Don't think of it as a commercial, think of it as the start of a conversation.

Today, Christine Ford is testifying about allegations against Judge Brett Kavanaugh in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

But this isn't the first time in recent history that a woman has testified about a Supreme Court justice nominee.

In 1991, Anita Hill accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment and testified about her allegations publicly.

Watch her full testimony in the two videos below.

Thomas had been her supervisor at the United States Department of Education, and he was nominated by Geoge H.W.

Bush — and ultimately confirmed.

There had been little opposition to Thomas until a private interview between Hill and the FBI was leaked to the press.

In October 1991, she testified in publicly testified hearings that she had been sexually harassed.

She said he had asked her out repeatedly, she refused, and then he discussed sexual subjects with her at work, including talking about his own anatomy.

Orrin Hatch implied that Hill was working with lawyers and interest groups to destroy Thomas' chance at a nomination.

And Thomas said he considered Hill a friend, and her allegations were hurtful and he no longer believed things would work out just because he did his best.

Hill passed a polygraph test, but Thomas did not take one.

Meanwhile, Hill's credibility was also questioned.

Thomas was ultimately confirmed.

Vice put together a video of the most outrageous questions that Senators asked Hill.

Dalton State Registration Video 2: How to Find CRNs - Duration: 5:44.

Hello and welcome to the second video in a three-part video series covering the registration

process at Dalton State College. In this video we're going to cover how to find class times

and their course reference numbers, or CRNs. By this point, you already want to have met

with your advisor to discuss a plan of courses that you are going to be taking in your future

terms. This is going to be helpful to help you search. You also want to have an advising

schedule template or something similar to this that you can write your class times,

you class days, and your CRN numbers down. If you haven't done this part, go back to

video one and it explains how to contact your advisor and plan ahead. To begin, let's go

to daltonstate.edu and scroll over "Academics". Next, we're going to click on the "Classes"

link. After that, we are going to click "Class Schedule". This will bring us to the class

schedule program that we use to search for courses. In this term box, you want to select

the term that you are wanting to register for. This is also the term that you are going

to search for classes in. In this video, we're going to use spring 2018 as an example, however,

you would put in the semester that you want to register for. For example, fall 2018, spring

2019, so on and so forth. Again, we're going to use Spring 2018 as an example and we're

going to submit the term. When you do that it's going to ask for parts of term. Most

students typically want to leave it where it says "All Parts of Term" because you want

to see all the A Session courses, all the B Session, and all the C Session courses.

These are just different parts of the school year. Once you have put in all parts of term,

submit that part of term. Next, we're going to start searching our individual courses.

Again, in this video we are only searching this biology course. You would want to search

every single course, one at a time. First, we're going to enter the subject code. In

this case, the subject code is B I O L, and that is the four letter heading of each course.

So we have found in the subject code box, BIOL, and we're going put it in there. Next,

we're going to search the campus code. Typically students would take the main campus courses,

however, some students want to take online class, which they could do through the "GML

ecore" or the "WEB online Dalton State". Some students, who live in the Ellijay or Blue

Ridge region want to take classes at the Gilmer County Center. They would select "W Gilmer

Campus", right here. For this example, we're going to select main campus. Lastly, we're

going to input the course number. In this case, the course number always follows the

subject code. The subject code was biology. The course number is 1108K. From the course

number menu we're going to scroll until we see our number that we are interested in and

we're going to put it in that box. Now, you can change the begin time, end time, instructor,

course status, and days of the week, however, the more of the that you change the fewer

and fewer options you're likely to see. What I recommend is only select the subject code,

campus code, and course number, and then click the search button. When you do that, you're

going to see all the options that are available for that given course. Each of these are biology

1108 courses. You want to first look at their times and days of the week right here. Up

in the top right we see a code marker box with M for Monday, T for Tuesday, W for Wednesday,

R for Thursday this usually trips students up but the R is for Thursday, and then F for

Friday. So, we see this first class is a Tuesday/Thursday, 1:40 to 2:55 class with a Thursday 3:05 to

4:55 lab time. You want to keep that in mind when you are searching courses to make sure

that that fits a time that you can take it. If you did wan to take this course, you next

want to look and see how many students are enrolled. Enrolled tells you how many students

have already taken seats. This one seats a total of 24. 23 students have registered so

this one is still open. When this class fills it will turn bright red and say "closed" like

this, this one that is circled in red here. For the most part, you want to avoid closed

classes if at all possible, however, you might have to look at taking a closed class. To

do that you would add yourself to the waitlist, which is exactly like registering and we'll

cover that in video three. Now, we're going to use this top Biology as an example. Let's

say we wanted to take this course. On your advising schedule template, I've copied and

pasted this from the previous screen just so you can see it for reference. On our template,

on Tuesday and Thursday, 1:40 to 2:55, we're going to write in Biology 1108 in each of

those boxes. See, Tuesday, Thursday, 1:40 to 2:55. We're also going to write in the

CRN number 20455. We've written that in there as well. Now, don't forget that this class

also has a lab on Thursday, 3:05 to 4:55. So it starts at 3:05 on Thursday and runs

until 4:55, which spills over into this second box, so it's important that fill up each box

that the class occuring. And that is because when you go back to search for your next course,

you want to be sure you don't have any time conflicts. You want to avoid any kind of time

conflicts. Marking out all of the boxes, you can avoid time conflicts there. Now, when

you have gotten all of your classes written down on your template you're ready to contact

your advisor again to get permission to register. And so what you would send them is the courses

that you are taking, so in this case we just searched the one biology 1108, as well as

the CRN number, 20455. Once they have received all of your courses and all of your CRNs they

will release you to register. In the next video we're going to take a look at, actually

how to register once you have been released so stay tuned and thank you very much for

Dalton State Registration Video 1: Contacting Your Advisor - Duration: 6:45.

Hello and welcome to the first video in a three part video series covering the registration

process at Dalton State College.

Over these three videos we're going to take a look at how to find out who your advisor

is, how to find your CRN numbers, or your course reference numbers, and then finally

how to register for classes.

So, in this first video we're going to take a look at how to find out who your advisor

is and contacting your advisor to plan ahead for future semesters.

So to get started we want to go to daltonstate.edu and you want to scroll over the Quicklinks

menu in the top right corner.

When you scroll over the Quicklinks menu you'll have several options you can pick from, but

we want to click on the one that says "Roadrunner Portal".

You also want to pay attention to this campus directory option as we're going to come back

to this in a few moments, but for the time being, go ahead and click on "Roadrunner Portal"

and login to your Roadrunner Portal.

Once you login to your Roadrunner Portal, on the left-hand side, there's going to be

a "Students" link that you scroll over.

When you scroll over it, it is going to give you several options, again, to choose from.

You want to click on the one that says "Degreeworks".

Degreeworks is a feature that we use at the college to keep track of all the courses you've

taken, what courses you still need to take, as well as things like your planner and you

GPA calculator.

So, it should look something like this.

When you go into your Degreeworks, the first thing you want to check is that your major

is correct.

So, if this major listed in here is what you intend to do, then you need continue onto

the next process, however, it this is not the major that you want to do; this is an

old major, or you're wanting to change your major, you need to contact your advisor to

see how to do that.

To find out who your advisor is, if you look down your Degreeworks a little-ways, you'll

have several options here: the "Student".

"ID number", "Classification", and then there is your "Advisor" category.

This student's advisor's name is listed right here.

This would be the person you would want to contact.

If, your advisor may be somebody listed different here, so whoever your advisor is will be listed

right here.

The other thing that you want to check is to see that you have no holds on your account.

Holds are things are going to prevent you from being able to register, possibly.

To double-check your holds, if you look under this "Holds" category on your Degreeworks

page, and it is clear, that means you have no holds on your account.

However, if there is something listed right here, that means there is a hold that is going

to prevent you from registering.

If you have questions about that hold you can contact your advisor, which would be listed

here and the should be able to help you with that.

Let's move on to see "How do we find out our contact information for our advisor?"

We're going to go back to the main webpage, daltonstate.edu, scroll over "Quicklinks",

and now we're going to click on "Ca,pus Directory".

From "Campus Directory" we're going to select "Faculty/Staff Directory".

Then we're going to input that person's name.

So, we looked at our Degreeworks, we found our advisor's name, now you can type it in

right here to find out the rest of their contact information.

You can also search by "School", if you're looking for a faculty member, or a teacher,

or professor, or anybody like that.

You can also search by department if you want to if you're looking for the Tutoring Center

or the Writing Lab.

Any of these options can be used to search, but since we know the advisor's name, we're

going to go ahead put that in right here.

When you search for it, it is going to pull that advisor's full, detailed information.

We see the advisor's name, we see their location.

This is their office location, Sequoya Hall, Room 127-B.

We also see their contact information; their phone number as well as their e-mail address.

This will allow you to contact your advisor or at least have access to all of their contact

information.

You can also click on your advisor's"Name" here.

This will show you their detailed faculty webpage.

On their faculty web page, they may have their office hours that they are usually in during

the school day so that if you wanted to visit them in person or you wanted to stop by you

can see their regular office hours right there.

They may also have some other important information such as forms, or links, or things like that,

that you might need to use that are located on their website.

You can click on there and view those as well.

Once you contact your advisor, you want to work with your advisor to help you plan for

the upcoming registration term.

Usually, when we work with students, advisors would look at your Degreeworks, and this is

a screenshot of a student's Degreeworks here.

You want to work with your advisor so see, based on your Degreeworks, what classes do

you need to take in the future term.

A lot of times, advisors will work out a progression chart to help you see, each semester, what

you should be taking.

This is just and example progression chart that I have created here, but we can see,

based off of this, the student is currently taking BIOL 1107K.

The next class they would want to take is BIOL 1108K.

As an advisor, we would work with you to help you plan out what semester classes you should

be taking.

Some guidelines to follow when doing this, always follow the prerequisites for courses.

For example, the prerequisite for BIOL 1108K is BIOL 1107K, meaning that we could not take

1108K without having completed BIOL 1107K.

Always follow those pre-reqs.

The same is true for this pre-calculus to calculus or English composition one to English

composition two or chemistry one to chemistry two.

These courses are the prerequisites for the courses in the following semester so we have

to follow those.

You also want to consult with your advisor if you make any changes to the progression

that you and your advisor work with.

Sometimes changes may not have any kind of effect, but sometimes, they might prolong

graduation, or they might make it to where you have to take summer classes, if you still

want to graduate on-time.

Always consult with your advisor if you are thinking about making changes to your progression

chart.

When you do make changes to your progression chart, always update your plan as you progress

through it.

Sometimes, life happens.

You may have to drop a course.

If that happens, you need to change your plan so that your accounting for that drop in that

given semester.

In doing this, you're ready to follow-up on the next part and actually look up your classes

to see what times and days and what CRNs are available there.

When you have met with your advisor, and have an idea of what classes you're going to be

taking in the following term and you want to also have something to write your classes

down on when you actually start looking them up.

Your advisor may have this schedule template.

You don't necessarily have to use this one but this is a tool that a lot of advisors

use here on-campus.

You can contact your advisor to request that you can get copies of this form or if they

don't have it, they might know where to find one for you.

In the next video we're going to take a look at actually how to look up CRNs for these

classes that have been approved by the advisor and we'll take that next.
