So I wrote this after the events that happened in Charlottesville, Virginia last year.
It was a big moment for this country and it made me think of something my mother had told me which was
I asked her why we're here and she just told me,
"we are here to love each other".
I wrote this for my mom, for the people of Charlottesville, Virginia and for Heather.
The thing I like most about this song is that
people tend to just be quiet.
You can make a very loud room really quiet when you're saying something important and
I've been really amazed by how that happens. You know with this one.
I think in the silence there is truth.
We want peace
So we wage a war
In the streets
Outside our door
And through the night
The children cry
They see us fight
But can't see why
There's no glory in the gunfire
There's no pride in the blood
There's no grace in the pain
When the tears are coming up
But there's hope for the heart
Behind the cold and the scars
You can call me a liar
But there's no glory in the fire
We don't belong
Or so we're told
Our love is wrong
This is not our home
So we take sides
What will we give
We'll see who's right
When we see who lives
There's no glory in the gunfire
There's no pride in the blood
There's no grace in the pain
When the tears are coming up
But there's hope for the heart
Behind the cold and the scars
You can call me a liar
But there's no glory in the fire
Hmmm
Hmmm
Hmmm
When the smoke has cleared
And the graves have all been dug
Will anyone fear
Will anybody love
There's no glory in the gunfire
There's no pride in the blood
There's no grace in the pain
When the tears are coming up
But there's hope for the heart
Behind the cold and scars
You can call me a liar
But there's no glory in the fire
You can call me a liar
But there's no glory in the fire
