Since March 2016, when the EU-Turkey deal came into force,
an increasing number of refugees remains stranded on the Greek islands.
Samos in the eastern Aegean Sea, is one of these islands.
My name is Najeem. I am from Sulaimaniye Iraq.
I am 39 years old. And I am married and have five children.
People from Morocco, Algeria, Iran, Somalia, Afghanistan and many other countries
have been forced to live here, in an uncertain present,
for months and months watching their hopes of reaching Europe being defeated.
I have been living in Samos for a month.
I came to Samos from Turkey. I am staying at the camp.
They gave us a container to live in. I live with my wife and children in one room.
Thanks god we live in peace. We are thankful and comfortable and happy.
This is the island's breathtaking view from the top of the open facility center.
When you look down reality strikes you hard.
As long as people remain stranded, tensions and sometimes clashes grow,
either among each other, either with the local community.
Refugees walking in the streets have experienced brutal and violent attacks
by people riding motorcycles and holding bats.
In the coming days, a part of Samos camp
will become a closed detention center for those who were rejected asylum.
Najeem, who fled Iraq with his wife and their five children,
risking their life for safety and peace is now living at Samo's camp.
I want to be able to take care of my children and offer them a normal life like going to school;
a right that all people should have to a good life.
I want to get my papers and leave this camp and offer my family a decent life,
without having to extend out my hand for help.
I want to live as a free man.
In Iraq we had an investment company with my siblings.
Me and my brothers were well off, living a decent and secured life
with our children and my siblings, and we felt secure.
Once they killed my brother and in 2010 they kidnapped my other brother
and we paid a ransom and then we decided to leave our country and come to Europe
taking the route that everybody takes and which is a very difficult route for the children and me.
We wanted to cross the road in peace in order to live in peace.
