The village dates back to the late 9th century
the name probably derives from "Curtis Azonis"
name still present in the coat of arms of the city
named after the fist Lord Azzone
who in 1094 donated it to the bishop of Pavia
then in 1314 the estate passed to the powerful family of bankers Pelletta

who ruled this country for about four centuries
The Cortazzone castle which overlooks
the majestic village
was probably built in the 13th century
of the original building however no traces remains
the remains are obvious signs of a
rebuilding that followed
the partial destruction occurred in
the 14th century during the succession
struggles between the Marquis of
Monferrato
the Visconti and the Savoy.
Windows ogives emerge at different points of
the masonry as well as an
ornate frames with brackets and bricks.
We can also find the square tower
ruined
in part during the franco-spanish
war of the early 18th century.
the Church of San Secondo stands on a green hill
called Mongiglietto, about one
kilometer away from the town of
Cortazzone; this is an example of
Romanesque architecture dating back to
the 12th century, notable for the
imaginative decoration that adorn the
south wall, the apses and the internal
capitals; the church is still open for
worship and there is the feast dedicated to
San secondo d'Asti, patron of Cortazzone.
The church has a main façade with visible
signs of a late superelevation made of
bricks above the small arches;
the decoration of the façade is quite simple;
The portal is framed in a mock slightly
overhanging porch and has a double
stone arch; we can see figures of a bird and
human head; higher up we find a frame
with pattern shells and above it two short
half-columns that frame the
rectangular window; very impressive are
the decoration which adorn the pillar
and columns; we find a wide range of
fantastic figures: a mermaid with two tails
birds, fish, horses and symbols such as shells
indicating perhaps, like those on the
façade, the relationship of the church
with the routes of the pilgrims.
The municipality of Montafia is located
on a hill at a eight of 248 m above sea level and it is
only 24 kilometres away from
the capital of the province of Asti.
The territory is characterized by a large wooded area that
differ much from the typical landscape
of Monferrato area which extends with large
vineyards and different crops; agriculture
has remained traditional while
industrial presence is very low; for this
reason the area of Montafia is in
excellent health: a prosperous and
lush greenery mixed with a
healthy air. Moreover the presence of
sulphurous water sources, with their healing
powers, enhance the wealth of the place.
The ancient name of Montafia is
Meletum, a swampy and humid place
while the current dates back to the
Middle Ages and in particular by to a
certain gentleman, Alfia of Variselli,
which to defend himself from
the attacks by the marquis of Monferrato, moved
with his entourage on the hill which thus
acquires the name "stronghold"
of Asti hills.
The family of Variselli owned the estate
until 1577,
taking the investiture by the
bishops of Turin and in recent years
by the duke of Savoy Emanuele Filiberto.
Unfortunately the original ancient
town was destroyed by french troops who
demolished the castle, the village and
the parish church.
These we see here are the ruins of the castle
that once stood majestic and sumptuous
here before being destroyed by French
troops led by Federico I Barbarossa.
The castle built by Alfia of Variselli
in the early 11th century was surrounded by
by high bastions and a long trench that made
the fortress even more secure; the access was
allowed by a drawbridge and a spiral
staircase leading to the plateau.
Montafia surroundings and the whole Asti area
area are located along the "Via Francigena"
in a strategic position
because it included an area between the
alpine passes and the river Po valley.
The architectural relics remained in Montafia
with the Romanesque churches
of St Martin and St George in Bagnasco
fraction highlight the fusion of the styles
from Europe that came down to us.
The Church of St Martin was the ancient
parish of Varisella village. The original
building probably dates back to the
12th century; the simple façade is
partially covered by plaster that mask
the structure; the building is now
a single chamber but the original had
three naves; the church underwent numerous
alterations over the centuries
and preserve Romanesque original
structure in the apse; the best preserved
part is the apse, decorated with a
two-tone border made of red bricks and
white sandstone; of great elegance are some
elements carved in stone like
the arch above the window on the south
side and there are decorations
located
at the center of the apse;
the interior of the church with geometric
floral decorations show a 16th century
fresco, where st Martin is giving
his cloak to the poor.
Bagna Cauda is the staple of the region
with anchovies and garlic, olive oil based fondue
it is served on an open flame to keep it warm
throughout the meal; it is a typical
autumn-winter dish that can be enjoyed
with the tannic "Dolcetto" or an acid and
fruity "Barbera".
The "Langhe" is an historical region of Piedmont
between the province of Cuneo and Asti
bordering with other historical regions like Monferrato and Roero
and are formed by a large hilly
landscape, by the river
Tanaro, Belbo, Bormida of Spigno
and Bormida Millesimo.
The "Palio di Asti" is one of the most important events in Piedmont
and the oldest "Palio" in Italy.

it took place on the second Sunday of September
in the central square of Asti.

which represent 14 quarters
of the town and 7 villages of
the province.
In white or with sauce, with mushrooms or baked
with cheese or spicy sauces
Piedmont agnolotti can be delicious with any
seasoning or an irresistible recipe
with roastbeef, dairy or with butter
sage and Grana Padano, even with
meat sauce from Piedmont and
finally in broth.
"Tajerin" is a type of ribbon pasta similar to "tagliatelle"
in Piedmont it is typically called
"tajerin". It is typically served
with butter, truffles or a roast sauce.
the Alba white truffle is a world famous
fungus that can be found in Piedmont
around Asti and Alba.
This fungi fruit in autumn
is shown best in cold winter months
they are shaved over pasta, risotto, burgers and more
white truffles also reach up to 360 a pound
and in 2004 it was sold 360.000 dollars at an auction.
the "Bunet" pudding is a very ancient
tradition typical of Piedmont
it is made of milk, eggs, sugar and a
"amaretti sweets" and it is very nice.
The term "Bunet" comes from the Piedmont slang
which means "little hat".
Among the renowned citizens of the town we remember Alberto Gatti
for his contribution to the art of photography
because he has given a historical account
of the life in 19th century
including the passage of the monarch or
the victory for the nation.
Then there is Roberto Rossetti
a local poet who left us
the unforgettable words
like the life of the time
and the rustican news; the poet
belongs to the famous movement of Scapigliatura.
Finally of course the popular Giovanni Bosco
also known as Don Bosco
he was not born in the town of Montafia but then
his name is tied to the city since his early age
there is in fact evidence of
his presence here because of his
participation in the festivities of
the town held here, for example the famous
tree climbing up on the greasy pole
that is still celebrated today on
the first Sunday of February.
