Hey guys, welcome to the channel, I'm Criss and you can also find me on Instagram @eyestocker.
I post my best photos there, so if you like photography, go ahead follow me.
This is the Canon g7x mark II.
I will give you the most important info about it, you'll find out why it became my favorite
camera in vacations and you will also see some footage that I recorded with this great camera.
Stick with me, this is an honest review, not a sponsored video.
So my main camera is the Canon 6d, it's a full frame camera and I have some good lens
for it, but the problem is that it cannot autofocus in video mode.
I was thinking to buy the Sony RX100 Mark V but that was a bit pricey for me at that
time: 1000$.
I also wanted a camera which I can carry around more easily than a bag full of lenses and
a heavy DSLR.
I knew that I was going to be on vacation for a week so I ended up buying the Canon
G7x mark II at a price of 680$, much cheaper than the Sony RX 100 mark V.
Before going on vacation I had to decide what camera do I want to take with me: the heavy
bag with the DSLR or the smaller G7x II.
And sometimes is hard to make a decision but you need to put it like this.
Are you going to take photos and videos just for fun, or do you want to shoot profesionally?
For me, this vacation spent in London was for fun only so I decided to take the smaller
camera and see what I can do with it.
Aaand by the way, what camera are YOU using when going on vacation?
Tell me in the comments below.
Here is what's great about this camera.
It can shoot raw files at 20 megapixels and 14 bit.
This is great because you can easily tweak your photos in Lightroom or Photoshop in post.
Another great thing about the Canon g7x II is the flip-up LCD touch screen, a good solution
for vloggers and selfies.
Actually the camera can recognize your face and then track you anywhere in the frame while
still being in focus.
Speaking about the autofocus, it's very good, but it's not perfect, sometimes the
camera is focusing on the background instead of your face.
That usually happens when there is not enough light in the frame, or if you are using a higher iso.
But who knows, maybe this can be improved in future versions of this camera.
Anyway, the focusing is right almost every time and it's fast enough, so well done Canon!
Ok!
Video features.
The g7x II doesn't shoot 4k, but it shoots 1080p at 24, 30 and 60 fps which is very nice
because you can slow down things in post production to impress your friends or instagram followers.
I will show you a slow motion edited sequence shot at 60 fps in this video.
The camera has a nice 4x zoom lens which is like a 24 to 100mm lens on a Full Frame DLSR.
For example this is the widest it can go… and this is with a 4x zoom, shot from the
same place.
You can obtain a nice blurred background for portraits and macro shots thanks to the f1.8
aperture but if you need total sharpness in the frame you can raise the aperture up to
f11 using the function ring which can be set to work smooth like butter, thanks to this
switch under the ring.
Transferring the photos to your phone for fast social media sharing, is one of the greatest
things on the G7x Mark II.
Using the dedicated wireless button on the right side of the camera and the Camera Connect
app on the phone you will transfer photos in a matter of seconds.
I didn't used the camera flash too much, I have to recon but if you need it, it's
on the top left side of the camera and you can enable it with this switch.
The Canon g7x II has 2 internal stereo microphones, they record reasonable sound if there is no
wind outside.
Otherwise you will have an issue with this.
I just ordered the Micromuff Skinny from Amazon and hopefully that will solve the wind issue
on this camera.
It costs around 16$, but if you want a cheaper option you can just cut off the ear of your
teddy bear and use it as a wind protector like in this video.
I will drop you a link to the tutorial in the description, cause this little guy, is really cute.
As a conclusion, an external microphone on this camera is not an option because
you don't have any sound inputs available which is a bit annoying.
What you have instead is a mini USB port for file transfer and charging and an HDMI output.
I can say that I'm pleased with the battery life on this camera, with photos and videos combined you can survive almost an entire day.
And if full control is the most important thing, the Canon g7x II will not dissapoint you.
You can control your shutter speed, the aperture, iso and you can choose between manual, auto-focus,
or focus tracking.
The LCD panel can be used as a touch screen and you can easily change the focus point
by dragging this rectangle on any object.
Forget about the shaky footage because you can enable the image stabilisation and the
result is quite satisfying.
This is a comparison, on the right side you can see the stabilized footage and it looks
really nice.
And last but not least is the video time lapse mode option which is so user friendly.
3 types of scenes you can choose from.
The camera let's you choose the time interval, the number of shots and it displays the time
required for shooting and the final time lapse duration.
You press down the shutter, the camera will take all the shots for you and then create a final movie.
Trust me, you will enjoy the time lapse mode on this camera, it's really fun.
So I promised that I will show you some footage that I took with this camera at 60 fps but
before watching that, I just want to mention that the g7x II can do a lot more things,
I was just pointing out the ones that I really enjoy or those which can be improved.
You'll find some links in the description, go check them out and leave a comment below
if you have something to ask about the camera, maybe I'll do some other tutorials on this subject in the future.
And if you own a Canon g7x mark II, tell me what do you like and you don't like about it.
And now, let's play that 60 fps slow-mo footage, don't forget to subscribe and hit
the bell to be notified when I post a new video.
Catch you in the next one, I'm Criss, buh bye now!
