Waching daily Feb 8 2017

Hey, there's so much that I have been through

Study too much and that's an issue

But I'm okay

Hey, I worked so hard just to get here

But now I'm gonna do it again

It overtakes my heart

Came to the city to follow my star and

Four years med school

Eating my granola from a mason jar and

I

Can't stop

No, I

I

Won't stop

So open your umbrella

Time to brush up on our yoga

In our Lululemon pants

With our Starbucks in our hands

Follow me around the Seawall

Let me listen to the rain

Think the sky is looking softer

We're just hoping for an offer

We're just hoping for an offer

Now this is a story all about how

My life got flipped turned upside-down

And I'd like to take a minute so listen to me

About how I got med at UBC

* Beatbox *

In British Columbia born and raised

I showed up to the interview praying for days

Hyperventin' and perfusin' trying to look cool

And readin' out the novel they want me to review

When I walked into the room, thought I was doing so good

Shaking hands and labeling the best I could

Started on the prompt, then I got scared

Do I remember the difference between beneficence and what's fair?

Second station, yo this is great

Got the prompt served up like it's on a plate

Scholar, communicator, real nice flows

Seven minutes of me spitting those CanMEDs roles

Like Jeeter, I'm a leader, I'm all about that

I'm an advocate for you, I'll go up to bat

Done the MMI, thought it went well

I'm compassionate and ethical, I'm sure they could tell

I left LSC I was finally done

To ruminate for months on Premed 101

Then May came along, almost jumped out of my skin

Couldn't believe it - UBC I got in!

I pulled up to the LSC at quarter to 8

And I yelled to my mom "Yo holmes smell you later!"

I felt so excited, this had happened to me

Gonna get myself a UBC MD

* Dream sequence *

I got this X-Ray of someone's bones

This goes electric, wavey when I turn it on

All through the clinics, all through the wards

We're pulling all night shifts and staying up 'til dawn

'Cause I got that steth tucked in my pocket

Ten new patients on my sheet

You are febrile with myalgia and a cough

FLU!

Please don't take your eyes up off it, moving pathologically

Spinal reflex while we knock it

Could you stop?

Remember those nights when studying SOAPs

We learned our FIFE now we're getting up close

When you move, well I already know

Your diagnosis

Diagnosis

Nothing I can see but your diaphragm-phragm-phragm

Maybe let's request an echocardiogram-gram-gram

All those things I do with my healing hands-hands-hands

And ain't nobody leaving soon so keep dancing

I can't stop the healing

So just dance dance dance

I can't stop the healing

So just dance, dance, dance, dance

Got this feeling in my body

Can't stop the healing

Got this feeling in my body

Can't stop the healing

Got this feeling in my body

We're all here

We made it into med school treating patients

It's all in history taking

It's pass fail

We can finally learn and take the courses we don't need to ace

'Cause baby if we built a med school

It would be just like the LSC

'Cause UBC is something special

West coast life is simply like a dream

Baby you'll be new med students

Come on, come along with us

Four sites in this beautiful province

Distributed proudly

Too busy CBL preppin' to get knocked off our feet

Baby you'll be new med students

The best place is U-B-C

So come inside the LSC

The best place is UBC

What Video Games Teach Us About U.S. Anti-Establishmentarianism | Nato Thompson - Duration: 2:01.

I don't know if you've ever played video games but I play a lot of them.

And there's a certain kind of ethos that's in a lot of video games, particularly those

games like Call of Duty and the first person shooter games that it's important to pay attention

to because I feel like they really hit the spirit of the age.

Or even games like Grand Theft Auto, these are the biggest selling video games by the

way.

They're like Beyoncé of video games.

But in those games basically you're this fighter who everyone has betrayed.

Like the U.S. military betrays you, your family betrays you, everyone is out to get you, and

even your close military buddy or whoever.

The storylines are always that ultimately everyone is screwing you.

And certainly it is a safe position for a video game because it's safe across the entire

ideological spectrum.

But I also think it pinpoints a certain kind of mood of the era that antiestablishment

runs deep across so many currents and everyone's got their idea of who the man is.

You look at even like a Coca-Cola ad and they'll encourage you to go in your cubicle and throw

out your papers and get out there and just be free.

And so even like corporate America is encouraging us to fight the man.

Like you even look at like the Mac ads and they've got like it's like do you remember

those old ads and it was like the dweebish PC computer guy and then the Mac guy was like

this kind of Red Hot Chili Peppers hipster kid and he's like hey.

He's the individual; it's freedom.

But I think even then even the spirit of anti-establishment gets into the establishment.

And so just to say because these big video games like Call of Duty they're mega industries,

they're not like some scrappy antiestablishment thing.

They've got people that work on it the size of major films like Jurassic Park, big money.

But everyone's anti-establishment and certainly the mood in this country is deeply antiestablishment.

I think while true, it makes it very difficult to build things in that particular psychological

climate.

Developing Topics for Healthcare Videos - Duration: 4:31.

At Gravity Digital, we're going all in on video in 2017. In fact,

we are trying to make about half of the content we produce video-based.

Now, that seems like a lofty goal, and we've got a few things we're going to put

in place to help us with that, but first, I want to share a few stats with you about

video. So, according to the Fire Brand Group, 85% of marketers have seen positive

ROI from video. So if you're looking at video, there's great evidence here that

it's got a good return on investment. A couple of other stats for you,

YouTube reports mobile video consumption increases 100% every year.

Ninety two percent of mobile video consumers share video

with others, so video is a great way to get shares and engagement

organically. And one third of all online activity is spent watching video.

So, those stats probably give you an idea of why we're so excited about video and

have committed to it for 2017. But video can be daunting. A lot of times it's the

idea of where do I start? How do I come up with an idea for a video?

And then also understanding I don't want my video to just be static or noise.

I know I've got to create something dynamic to have it stand out.

Well, one of the ways we do that is with user stories. Now, user stories are a part

of agile marketing. There's lots of great information on agile marketing.

There's books, all kinds of resources where you can read about that, but the

specific part that will help you with video is a user story.

Now, a user story is this, "As a blank, I want blank, so that blank." So, when

you're filling in the blanks for a user story, you try to solve one issue or help

someone get a better understanding of one thing. You don't go too deep and try to

do too much with your video, you're just trying to help them with that one thing.

So, let's take a couple of examples, look at a couple of examples of a good user

story. So, let's say you're a business that provides a product or a service to a

healthcare organization, you might look at it this way, "As a patient experienced

professional, I want telephone processes that will help me make a good first

impression." Or perhaps you are a health care provider, and you want to come up

with a user story for a patient, you might look at this way,

"As a first time expecting mother, I want to know what to expect in

the first few weeks after birth so that I can give my baby the best start."

And those are a couple of user stories that will really get you in the mindset of

producing that quality video. Video is generally going to fall into a couple of

categories, so let's take a look at some types of video, and then you could figure

out how to apply your user story to one of these types of video.

First would be like a brand or a hero video. This is very promotional in nature.

It's highlighting your product. It's highlighting your company.

You've seen those kinds of videos, and they can work very well.

Another one of our favorites is a testimonial. Testimonials are a great,

great way to have someone else tell your company story. Always very effective and

generally come across well and are received very well. You might also look at

some type of event, so if you're doing a fundraiser or something in the community,

that's a great way to highlight your organization and solve one of those user

stories. And speaking of user stories, you might look at a specific feature of your

product or service. That's a great way to find that one issue that a user might be

dealing with and work to solve it. Perhaps your company's got some news coverage,

or there's news in your industry, and you can offer up an opinion on it.

That could be a great way to produce a video and solve a user story,

and the last would be maybe an aftercare video. So something where you address

something and help someone after they've already purchased your product or service.

So, there's a couple of types of videos you can produce. One of the keys to that,

and you're going to want to think about this when you're developing a user story,

is your buyer persona. And if you haven't researched personas yet or got into that,

you can download a really handy tool kit from our website on developing buyer

personas for healthcare. I tell you what, if you would, share some of these videos

you're creating with us. We'd love to take a look at them and let others know about

them as well. So, happy shooting in 2017.

you are beginning your research and

might not have too much in the final

that's okay too because what the

reviewer's going to look at is ok so you

had some basics you got a lot of gaps and

a lot of holes but in the end you're

saying what is the future study what is

my future work what is my in

anticipation you give that maybe next

year you come back they're now going

to see you

ok so you gave me an introduction not

give me some meat so what happened in

the last year so either both posters

can work there's no saying you have to

have a final end product the final end product

is your thesis for your masters' paper

this is just a snippet of

what's going on so get that message

and be focused for that day

alright so I don't want you to shoot for

the stars

what I want you to do is build a galaxy

is what we are so we're building of a

final thing we're not shooting all what

i could do this and I could do that now

we build it got the galaxy talk about

the gallaxy we talk about the milky way I

don't need you to tell me well in the

milky way through the year that's too

much

show me your Galaxy show me your post

alright so let's talk about your

essentials about your layouts that is the think part

of presenting a poster is to be

organized how are you how are you

going to give this you can be super

unfocused or you can have what I'm

saying is that's what I say the

engineering more logical everything kind

of flows in a nice block we talk about

reading you know English read from

the left to the right that is the same

way your poster should sort of

chronologically go from the left to the

right and your art you know if you have

something if people don't necessarily

see things that bloom out so going to the

Middle out that throws them off this

isn't and you know and I kid with my son

you know what he's into the the end

number say wrong the magnet magna magna

books the animation books from you know

most things that you know now they

basically the book starts with the back

but I called the back of the book reading to the front

you know I mean that's illogical to most

people in the US to do that it would be

to go you know first here

so what is your abstract to the bottom

line is who are you thanking that's typically

what she is seeing there is some ways to go

outside of that organizational structure

because you have room issues so think

you would go outside as sources so it

really doesn't matter if you put your

sources in the right left front

just got to have them so some of those

little things that people aren't keying in on

its fine having out of a flow or out of

a

logical order so organization your

layout and again most Layouts are square you

know your posters are probably pretty

square or rectangle whether you

flip it on its end or horizontal or

that really doesn't in most cases as

long as you're meeting the criteria

size if you i would say if you were

wanted to do something special but you could do

circles and that but wanting to have you

know you're gonna have to cut because most of

the printing you're going to be having

done is going to be typical big printers

are going to print flat so it's not

necessary but you could do something

creative especially if you were into art

may be there you know it is have a

similar some things in humanity before

sometimes for engineering it is pretty easy to

come up with what I'm going to put to

attract people to focus on because ok

it's easy to show picture of a pump or

it's easy to have a lot of chemical

structures but say if your warned that

literary thing to show

sometimes when there's a struggle to

make it artistic and that way if they

can get away with maybe doing a pie it

were a certain someone circle illogical

but there that would be their model so

maybe they develop a model and in that

model it is a pie you know they have

a center theary concept so you could and

essentially build your model as your

post

so there are there are ways around maybe

a little less boring that it's

just text that you could do that

remember there's always issues with

grammar I don't know if anybody has played around

with it there's these things you get

in facebook social media

where basically you're reading

a sentence and most of the words are

spelled wrong

have you seen those it's about our brain

thinking so you say you have the first

letter and the last letter right

most people because our brain thinks

in a bigger context so if i had say a word

like milk but I had the "L" and the "K" backwards

most of you would see the "M" "L" "K" no matter

how these are arranged you would still

know the word as milk that's how our

brain works however remember in a competition

and if you know it you sent the emails out and I sent an email

my bosses email out he just says forward this

and within five minutes I got

three people call write me back

and saying it shouldn't be on it

should be two or shouldn't do so people

pick up real quickly when you spell

something wrong that i was working on a

letter the other day and because I've

been working schedules everything to my

mind has been 2017 spring 2017 fall 2017

so I was writing a letter and I put the

date yesterday date i put november 9th

2017 and i have given it to other

people and it wasn't until I actually

uploaded the things ready to submit that I

thought I better make sure I picked the

right one open up and right in front of

me was the wrong date this is after

other people looked at it so it happens but

the best way is remember to try to make

sure your grammar is right and you're

getting spelling errors my again suggest

sometimes we

cannot proof our own writing

some people just your brain is already

thinking well thats what I meant to say what do you mean 157 00:07:22,510 --> 00:07:26,260 I didn't say but that what I meant to say instead our brains

work a little bit faster sometimes that

what we're putting down on paper and especially with

computers which ready so find someone

else to prove your paper

My CubaRican Snacks - Duration: 3:09.

Now if you follow me on social media,

which if you don't already all the links are in the

description so go ahead and do that.

You'll know, I am pretty homesick.

Living out here in California, there's not a lot of Cuban

and Puerto Rican things.

And I didn't realize until now, how much I would miss

living in Florida and having access to my culture

constantly.

But luckily my family has been very kind

and has mailed me some of my favorite snacks.

That I grew up with and I wanted to share it with you.

First my friend Gustavo sent me these

when I moved out here.

But my niece also sent me some as well.

And they're Pilones!

Pilones are these little lollipops.

The red part for me doesn't have a specific taste

I guess it's like, kinda like strawberry.

And it has little sesame seeds in them.

For me this is like the epitome of

a Puerto Rican childhood.

I remember when my mom use to take me to

the little Spanish stores in Kissimmee.

And these guys would be at the register.

And I would beg my mom to get them for me.

They were only like a quarter for one.

And I loved them!

I don't know why, they're so simple but

I love these lollipops.

Now the next thing is

very very close to my heart.

It's Kresto!

This is a powder chocolate that you can make chocolate milk with.

And it's very special to me.

My mom and my Abuelo use to have this

when my mom was a kid.

They use to eat the powder but also make chocolate milk with it.

And my mom use to buy it for me and

would do the same.

This made me feel very close to my Abuelo

because he passed away right before my parents got married.

So it was like a little connection to him.

I don't know whether or not this is actually like a Cuban thing?

But for me I associate it with being Cuban because

my mom loves it.

And she's Cuban.

And I thought this got discontinued.

Because...

I think by the time I was in high school, I stopped

seeing it in all the stores my mom and I use to try and get them from.

And even out here I've looked for it.

And I could not find it but my niece

found it in Miami.

And she sent me this.

And now I have to ration it because I don't

want to use it all.

Now the last thing I'm sure every Cuban and Puerto Rican

should know what this is.

The can is a little bit dented because of the mail.

Florecitas!

These little cookies are life.

They're just a little wafer with royal icing on the top.

And they're addicting.

My niece sent me these and I honestly didn't expect

her to send it.

These don't exist out here in California.

I have not been able to find them.

My boyfriend, who's Mexican, has never seen them before.

It was so cool to show him

just my childhood in a can!

But those are my favorite snacks.

My favorite childhood snacks that

really make me feel connected with my culture.

I really have to ration all of this because it's hard

to find them out here.

But I wanted to share it with you because

they just make me happy looking at them and

maybe if you see these things in your stores

get it and try it because they're delicious and they're great.

So that's it.

I'll see you all next time.

bye!

How to Create an Exhibition Poster - Video Four - Duration: 4:25.

for the exhibition you will have five minutes

five minutes is what you have to go

through your presentation

the judges will have a little bit more

to talk to you so you're talking about

10 minutes 10 to 15 minutes that you may have a

judge there that's the judges and they

will know and I do they have there on

that page i showed you earlier they have

sort of a rubric that they check you

by and it's similar to show you guys

passes around I have two of them but this kind of what

they're using to judge you by and remember

somethings they're going to check you

is some of the things we talked about in

your presentation I ask one of my faculty who has been in

a judge and I asked him so

what is some of the things you look at

what gray offices right off i look at

how the poster looks and whether i can

kind of understand it and he said he's

political science

he does but I have judged history i have

judge engineering so your one-year

judges may not be with your

academic background that can happen so

he gets that so he honestly says I if I

can understand it then

can't talk to me obviously that's going

to loose points if that I don't

understand but they can explain it to

me then I kind of negates some of the

not understanding their poster so that's

how things judges look at so first let's talk about

dress you always dress one better than

the occasion

so if you're going to something and they

say you know they say well its casual

if you're presenting go one better we

had a graduate student we fought with

him he would wear a Hawaiian shirt

shorts and and sandals to present and when we would tell him

that you cannot wear that he go well

this guy he does it all time I said yes

and that guy is a Nobel scholar he can

and his year's do that you are a

graduate student you don't dress that way

because you will not be finding a job

you will really upset people

sorry it's the way of the world you know

look at you know just thinking the

politics here do we argue about one person

wearing pants suits and one person

having an orange face people do look at what you're

wearing its first impression we can't help

it i can't help but always dress one

better but be comfortable don't wear

something that you're not gonna like

particularly this may fall more around

for maybe high-fashion were you know

girls like to wear these super high platform

shoes you're going to stand all day I

guess if you are a supermodel that's

important to you but as college

student I would be wearing something i'm

not saying you can't work obviously

sneakers but wear something that has a

nice sole that you stand

you want to wear heels that's fine but

wedges for girls are much better right

dress comfortably just dress business

casual nice slacks guys you know ties if

you want to have you know it would be nice if you

have the jackets but I'm not telling you to

go out and buy jackets for this but you know a

nice tie a nice suit or nice shirt just try to

watch whatever you're eating that day

because unless you you know want to

throw a jacket on to cover the spot

something spill

you know you want to consider you know

what you're wearing next thing is to speak

clear slow and proper volume i have a

problem sometimes speaking slow i know i

talked a rapid pace and the more

excited I get the more rapid I get but you

do want to go slow you know you do want to

try to modulate that's the elevator

speech try calm yourself down speak

clear and speak proper vibe

How to Create an Exhibition Poster - Video Two - Duration: 3:49.

square but the style is your color tools

so what are you there are colors that

are wonderful his red sweatshirt is

wonderful

he draws my attention to his red sweater

then somebody say the Blues beside him

but too much red can also make people

angry can excite them i had a student

working with her she thought gray was

beautiful she had you spread everything

after about five minutes i finally said

to or I cannot be different i just can't

read your post

I this point my brain is fluttering so

much that my anxiety level with reading

it is getting so again certain font

colors are met to excite draw attraction

to if you want nothing don't use red but

use red to do exactly like the ! you

know or bolding those are to draw to

excite don't use the entire thing the

other one is don't use a talent for

everything

it's better you can bowl your whole

thing to make it stand up and own

talents at Alice again is one of those

types of fun use it to to convey that

message in science you will have to use

the Catholics for latin or or or certain

words that that's required it must be

attached so so don't make everything

towels because then you can see what's

supposed to be a talents so use that

again

accent your piece not overwhelm you

you have only got a window time to catch

their attention

anybody ever done and elevate your

speech you know what an elevator

speeches you know 10 so i have their

speech soon to what you sir I need you

to introduce yourself if think about it

they say you're in an elevator and now

somebody else walks in and says hello

who are you now I think that you have it

unless you were going to you know into

some multi sighs great for the Trump has

built atop you know you only have a few

minutes so minute or two to say shortly

Who am I that's what you should develop

your elevator speech so as people come

up to you you should be real quickly

saying hi I'm Allison sure how are you

doing today I'm from penn state

harrisburg with the political science

group i'm going my paper on Homeland

Security's you have a minute and i can

talk to you about it you know get that

down and then then something's relax

after that so when you get your elevator

speech that is generally the hardest

thing to do is introduce yourself and

calm yourself down the same time colors

i talked about it but I'm going to go

one more step on color usually I like

the three Rule three colors three fonts

don't go more than three colors for

three months

choose wisely said people red red is not

necessary color on the other side watch

yellows because they don't print very

well and again they're hard to see so

people do have color blindness

so that's why usually it is better to

stay in a dark using black font a dark

dark

don't you like lose again they're like

yellows yellows and blues can be

difficult for some people to read

Sue Desmond-Hellmann: What is precision public health? | VIEWPOINT - Duration: 3:32.

Michael: One of your many contributions as a public intellectual is this concept of precision

public health.

What is that, and why is it important?

Sue: So precision public health for me is important because it takes the incredibly

powerful concept of precision medicine: right drug, right patient, right time, and applies

it to public health and global health.

So you think about the right set of interventions for the right population, in the right geography.

If you're a minister of health in Ethiopia, you've got frontline healthcare workers who

might have a 10th-grade education, who might have limitations in budget.

And you've gotta pick 10 things that she has in her bag that she goes out and carries to

somebody in her village.

What should be in that set of 10 interventions?

What belongs there?

What should she be trained to do?

That's a tall order.

That is a tall order.

So precision public health, for me, is the concept of using data and monitoring and feedback

to give those caregivers and the decision-makers in the Ministry of Health, no matter where

you are in the world, or the Department of Public Health, if you're here in Washington,

D.C., the right information to maximize the value of every penny spent on health in service

of that community.

It really is a transition from a highly individualistic precise way of thinking to a more prevention-oriented,

more community-oriented way of thinking about being productive with the resources including

the human resources you have to keep a community healthy.

Michael: Do you have an example of where that's being done particularly well?

Sue: Well, actually I think we all are seeing an example of how that can be done well with

the Zika virus epidemic.

If you look at how we know where Anopheles mosquitoes are, that's the malaria mosquito,

we've used that for malaria control.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is the source of Zika and dengue fever and chikungunya,

some of the things people have been reading about, we know where the Aedes aegypti mosquito

is, we know where Zika has traveled, we know community by community.

Yesterday we knew that there was a case of Zika in Texas.

That's precision public health.

Knowing precisely what community, where the patient was, what the transmission route was.

And that allows caregivers and decision makers not to just say, "Okay, everybody in America

should be worried about Zika."

That makes no sense, and it's cost-prohibitive.

But if you know the very communities, you can target vector control, getting rid of

the mosquitoes, you can target messages for women who are pregnant or who might become

pregnant, you can target messages for males who can transmit Zika to their partners.

And both the public health messages on the communication front and the interventions

on vectors and virus can be much more precisely delivered.

That's a good example of where, with the right resources and the right data, we can make

a huge difference.
