"Embracing The Messy" - Video Marketing Tip - Duration: 2:36.

My friend, Michael Port, once taught me

a phrase that has really had a big impact

on my life, and I think it's the phrase

that in so many ways we have forgotten

in society and it comes from the acting

field and the phrase is "Embrace the messy"

So powerful when actors get a script

they often read it together and there's

a period of time, as Michael describes it,

where the reading, the acting isn't very

good, but they all accept this as part of

the process of making something great.

And because of that they often end up with

something that truly is wonderful.

Well, it seems like in this age of

digital, in this age of video, we have

sometimes forgotten this. We demand that

everybody is great and everybody is

perfect.

Whether it's with their content or

whether it's with their video or whether

it's with their skills I mean look at it

like this: Let's say you are trying to

establish a culture of video in your

organization. That means you're going to

engage your team, probably your sales

team, you're going to find that some are

really good and some, not so much.

But does that mean they're not going to

be good no it just means they're not

there yet. We can't expect them just to

all the sudden be great in front of the

camera, and so this is where "embracing

the messy" comes in. As we over the last

year have been training sales teams and

organizations how to be good on camera

amongst other things, this is the phrase

that we've been driving home again and

again and again and it's so cool when

you see an organization they embrace it

and they say you know what it's okay if

it's not just right it's okay if it's an

8 out of 10 it's okay because we know

the goal of course is that we get better.

So that is my challenge to you today,

"embrace the messy" as Michael Port says

and if you do I think you're going to be

really really successful.

And today I want to talk about how being able to speak different languages

and how switching from one language to another can change your personality completely.

Now as you may already know, I'm half British English and half French speaking Belgian

And sometimes I feel like when I switch from one language to another, I kind of become a different person

So here to help me illustrate what the hell I'm talking about

Please welcome the first ever guest I've ever had on one of my main videos on this channel

Hello everybody. How are you?

So Lenn is the french speaking side of me and she's here to explain

the differences she's noticed whenever we switch from one language to another

We are certainly different from each other

When you speak English you are more confident

You are able to create some kind of alter ego to get over our usual shyness

Whereas when we speak French, probably because we've lived here the longest

Our shyness seems to have its roots inside the French language

So it's harder to create a new persona around the language.

What?

Nothing, nothing. I'm sorry. I was just thinking about

Someone who would actually be enjoying this right about now...

You're being stupid.

So yes, since English isn't a language I get to use on a day-to-day basis, it's easier to construct a personality around it

It's kind of my super hero mask.

Also maybe because English has a creative meaning to it

Remember how we discovered an aspect of our creativity during our advanced English lessons in high school

It really is thanks to the English language that we got access to most of our creativity

Yeah definitely.

Also English is the language in which I watch most of my movies

and read most of my books so it definitely symbolises creativity

Do you think that English symbolizes the real world, the reality of things?

I hadn't really thought about it before but that's exactly it:

French is the real world, the everyday world where we all speak French

Whereas English is the imaginary and creative world where anything can happen

And I don't know if you've noticed but

When you're comforting me whenever I'm sad or anxious, you comfort me in English

It really is the reassuring language, the magic language sort of..

Yeah that's so true. That's so weird. I love what's coming out of this conversation.

Yeah well that's easy for you to say: you have the magic language, the creative and imaginary language

Whereas I'm stuck with the real world

Yeah I guess it is, though we do compliment each other really well and we balance things out?

And imagine! If we do manage to master other languages, there could be more of us here...

Oh my God, no. I hope not, there's already way too many of us up in here, am I right?
