Tense and release, but backwards! (Breath) - Duration: 3:15.hi my name is Elissa Weinzimmer I'm a
vocal health educator and the founder of
voice body connection and today in my
how to warm up video series I'm so
excited to be sharing with you an
exercise about breathing which of course
is a very important part of our voice
because it's our power source
now here's something people don't think
about with breathing very often and that is
when I'm speaking to you right now I am
exhaling right that makes sense I'm
generally not inhaling while I'm speaking
unless there's a couple Scandinavian countries
where they go ya-ya which is kind of cool but I'm
exhaling for the most part while I'm speaking or
singing so then here's the thing that
means the moment that we inhale is the
moment to recover right and yet so very
often if you walk on the street and
ask someone to breathe
they're going to do this right and then
you tell them to let go and they go right
so our bodies are actually conditioned to
do the opposite of what we do for voice and
speech so we're going to do something
really simple today it's really quick and
easy and it's something that I want you
to do in all of your warm-ups
because when you remind your body to
function in this way it will work so
much more efficiently when you're
speaking or singing here's what you do
you do the work on the exhalation and release
on the inhalation the whole idea is we're
trying to let the inhalation be easy
now I do a more extended version of this
exercise in my online course how your voice works
so if you join the class you can check out a more
extended version there but it's really
easy to do this in a very simple way here's what you
do you squeeze your whole body and you breathe out and
then you expandable your whole body I like to think of getting
into a starfish shape and you let it your breath come in
there you go
ok ready squeeze and breathe out and you can
make that sound if you want while you exhale and
then when you inhale it's actually probably
going to be silent and really easy and
maybe a feeling like you've never had before which
would be awesome
so squeeze and breathe out and then
expand and let the breath come in yeah and here's
something I talk about in how your voice works as
well is that when we expand it actually is
our breath because if you think about it
a definition of breathing that I like to share is
that breathing is the shape change of
our torso and specifically the cavities
in our torso an inhalation
specifically is when the ribcage and the
lungs expand and there's lower pressure
in there and the air wants to go in right
so long story short the shape change the
expansion is our breath right so when you
expand like this that is your breath
that's your ability to breathe in
so we squeeze and breathe out and then we expand
and allow the breath into the space for
creating right and it will probably be really
quiet if you don't have any obstruction
or wheezing in your vocal track to make
the airflow sounds like it's making a
sound does this make sense
let's do it one more time ready squeeze and
breathe out expand and let the breath come in
very nice ok so do this just a couple times
at the beginning of your warm-up it's a
beautiful way to remind your body to do
the work on the exhalation and let the
inhalation be easy
enjoy
