Hey guys, I'm Bonefoot!
And it's time for my third annual Top favorite games of the year list.
I always enjoy doing these, mainly because it gives me the chance to talk about some
great games I otherwise might not get the chance to.
2016 was a little lackluster in terms of new games for me personally, but there were a
few gems, and I'm going to talk about five of them.
So let's do this!
2016 marked my first steps into virtual reality gaming with the PlayStation VR.
It was tough picking my favorite VR game.
I was really considering picking Tethered for this spot.
It's such a fun, charming and addictive little real time strategy God game,
but ultimately I had to go with Battlezone.
It was the first game I got really invested in in VR.
As redundant as it is to say, you really feel like you're in a cockpit of a futuristic tank.
Everything on the dashboard has some gameplay relevance and it's so god damn cool seeing
the gun of the tank firing right in the top of your vision.
What hooked me right away was the very polished arcadey gameplay.
You slide around, weaving through enemies and enemy fire, while trying to destroy them
with a decent arsenal of weapons, and you have to complete different objectives like
defending your base, destroying or hacking enemy bases, killing enemy convoys, or just
straight up surviving multiple waves of enemies, and all of this is so satisfying to do in VR.
Another thing I love about the game is the pretty brutal difficulty.
A short campaign only lasts for about an hour, but man, it took me dozens of hours of playing
and getting good at the game AND a little bit of luck before I was finally able to beat
a campaign in normal difficulty, and I've yet to do it a second time.
You only get a very limited amount of lives and getting killed is easy.
You can only take a handful of hits before you're down.
You really need to get to know all the different enemy types and their firing patterns if you
want to have the upper hand.
You also never want to go against many enemies at once, because they're like zombies, you
can handle one or two of them no problem if you know what you're doing, but a group
of them can easily overwhelm you.
Losing all your lives immediately terminates the whole campaign and throws you back at the start.
There is a way of making the game more manageable, which is by playing the awesome online co-op mode.
It works beautifully and without any lag issues as long as you can find players who are somewhat
close to you.
It's just like the solo game, but with up to 3 other players, who you can heal and revive
by staying close to them, which is huge, because then you don't lose lives.
The VR headset has a built-in mic, so everyone can voice chat if they so choose, which is great.
Random person: I'm coming in dude! Hold on.
The developers are also very approachable.
They talk with players via Twitter, schedule playing sessions where you get to play the
game with them online and constantly have all kinds of different giveaways, which is cool.
Battlezone!
Another year, another From Software game in my Top list.
This time it's Dark Souls III.
I've pretty much said everything I've wanted to say about them by now.
I love these games and this third one is about as good as the second one, which I thought
was only a slight step down from the incredible first Dark Souls.
It feels like returning home every time I get to come back to this world with a fresh new sequel.
It's a good!
I've been dying for another installment of Animal Crossing ever since New Leaf.
So when I heard about Stardew Valley for the first time just days before it was about to
come out, I got really intrigued and decided to get it in hopes that it would hold me over
till the next Animal Crossing.
This game came out of nowhere for me and completely took over my life for a solid week.
I was playing it non-stop every morning, day and night and I had a blast.
There's just something so relaxing and addictive about these kinds of games where you just
constantly do repetitive simple tasks and collect stuff and then gradually get rewarded
for them in different ways.
The gameplay is really fun in all the different activities you do: farming, fishing,
exploring the dungeons, fighting monsters, mining, etc.
There's just so much to do, so many things to collect and so many characters to build relationships with.
Building your farm is a ton of fun too, as is decorating your house.
It blows my mind that a single person made this whole game!
The pixel art style is gorgeous!
I love the vibrant colors and the mellow music fits perfectly for this kind of game.
One little nitpick I do have about the game is that I would've liked to have seen a
bit more of an overarching narrative.
I really enjoyed the beginning of the game and all the mysterious little things that
happen every now and then that make it feel like there's something more to this Stardew
Valley place, but I feel like those things weren't explored as much or as closely as
I would've wanted.
Stardew Valley is easily worth your time and money if you're a fan of these kinds of
farming games with slight RPG elements.
Just remember to also eat and sleep every now and then so you don't die.
Virtual reality wasn't the only new gaming front I entered in 2016.
Mobile gaming isn't something I expected myself to get into, but as with any platform,
it was only a matter of time before games I wanted to play started appearing on it.
God damn Nintendo making me buy a new phone!
I love Pokémon Go tho.
To have a game I not only can play while I'm just walking outside, but to have that be
the actual main gameplay element of the game is so awesome to me.
One of my biggest pet peeves in life is the unnecessary wasting of time on menial tasks,
like walking from one place to another.
I'm a brisk walker and always choose the quickest routes I can, but now that I have
this game, I actually don't mind taking a little longer or choosing longer routes
to get to places just so I can maybe hit up a few more pokéstops on the way and catch
more pokeymans, which is a huge accomplishment for this game.
It's been a very successful motivator for me to just go outside and move more, and it's
made things like going grocery shopping or walking to work a hell of a lot more fun.
They've made booting up the game, playing it and stopping the game so easy and hazzle
free that I almost never leave my house without playing the game anymore.
Catching more and more pokémon and filling up your pokedex has never been this much fun
for me, not even in the main series games.
There's just something so satisfying and addictive about it.
It was a gorgeous summer when the game came out in July.
The sun was blazing for weeks.
I actually got a tan for the first time in many many years.
I played the game for around 7 hours every single day just walking and biking around
my home city and all the surrounding areas.
And with how crazy popular the game got, even in my small home city there were always a
bunch of other people walking around playing it too, and it was such a cool feeling being
able to approach and talk to these complete strangers so easily, because of this shared interest.
I took a few month break from the game when it started getting cold in the beginning of
fall, but now in January I came back in the dead of winter in Northern Finland,
which doesn't make it easy to play it.
On colder days I can only bring the phone out for like 5 to 10 seconds at a time and
then quickly put it back in the warm pocket or else it'll freeze and shut itself down.
On top of all this the game is also 100% free.
Unless you're a crazy collector like me who wants to own this thing.
This thing is useless by the way.
I do not recommend it, but I do recommend Pokémon Go, as it is a very unique, fun and
innovative game that introduces gaming into new areas of life where I didn't think I
would ever be playing games, like the aforementioned grocery shopping trips and on the way to work, etc.
And I think that's awesome!
The Bravely series is a godsend to fans of traditional JRPGs like me.
It has all the charm and the gameplay elements that we love from those old classic games,
like the turn-based combat and the world map, but also adds in many modern gaming concepts
to make them less tedious, like being able to fully control the random encounter rates,
battle speeds and even the difficulty on the fly.
Bravely Second starts out so incredibly strong and hooks you right in.
The story kicks off with a bang and there's some awesome character moments very early on.
They sold me on the new main character right away with this hilarious scene where he's
super down on his luck in the pouring rain and suddenly just starts singing this really
cheesy song to himself.
All the other characters, old and new, are very endearing and funny as well, and the
English voice acting and writing is spot on.
It's done with just the right blend of seriousness and absurdity.
The brilliant brave and default battle system is still one of the best turn-based systems
I've ever played, and the expanded job system brings in even more party customization and
flexibility so you can really shape the characters just the way you like it.
The visuals are incredible, especially for the low resolution 3DS screen.
The art style is just so well done that you have to be careful not to drool on your precious
collector's edition art book so you don't ruin it.
And then there's the music.
I never say something is my favorite this or that lightly.
I spend an unreasonable amount of time thinking about these kinds of things.
And I think I can pretty confidently say that the Bravely series has my favorite
(video game) soundtracks of all time.
The Bravely Default soundtrack is so fucking good.
It's probably my single favorite soundtrack, but Bravely Second's OST doesn't stray far from it.
The reason they hit home with me so much is because my favorite genre of music is power metal
and the Bravely soundtracks, especially the battle themes, are just straight up
power metal songs, and incredible ones at that.
Listen to this.
Bravely Second is my game of the year of 2016.
This was definitely a very unique favorite games of the year list.
All 5 games are so distinctly different from each other.
Definitely leave your thoughts and your own favorites down in the comments.
And now let me show you all my 2016 honorable mentions and games I wanted to play, but didn't
have time to or didn't feel like playing yet.
2017 looks to be an incredible year for me in terms of new games coming out
that I'm really excited about.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Persona 5,
Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, Red Dead Redemption 2, Super Mario Odyssey.
Many of these games' predecessors are some of my favorite games of all time, so I have
extremely high hopes for them.
I'm planning on making 'First time playing' videos for all of them.
So look forward to seeing my first reactions to each of them as they come out,
and stay tuned for more other videos as well and thanks for watching, stay tuned!
That's... fuck!
What the fuck.
...and stay tuned for more other videos as well and thanks for watching, stay tune...
What the fu...?!
...and stay tuned for more other videos as well and thanks for watching, take care!
