Today I'm gonna show you how to obtain a cinematic look by color grading your images

in Lightroom and we are starting right now.

Ok, so first of all, what is color grading?

According to Wikipedia "Color grading is the process of altering and enhancing the

color of a motion picture, video image, or still image".

So basically you add complementary colors into the shadows, midtones and the highlights of

your image.

Let's see how we can do this in Lightroom.

I opened up this very cool image with an athlete preparing to make a deadlift exercise.

When making a color grading try to adjust the photo to have a low contrast, because

this will give you a better control on the details.

And question of the day guys: when are you adjusting your contrast? before starting to

take photos or in post production?

So I will start here by adjusting the temperature of this image, I'm trying to find a neutral

look for the white balance and I think that a negative 4 or 5 will be a good choice for

the moment.

Next I will try to bring back some details here in the windows area, so I'm pushing

the Highlights slider to the left.

I will move down to the Split toning Area now.

This is the place where I can add specific colors for the shadows and highlights.

But I will need to choose colors which are complementing each other.

I have a lot of r ed in my image, in the bricks and her skin.

The complementary colors could be Red with Green, Blue with Orange and so on, you can

check out this website called Adobe Color CC, I drop you a link in the description,

where you can choose here "Complementary Colors" and then… have some fun by choosing

the perfect tones for your image.

In my case, because I have a predominant Red color in the photo, I will use Red for the

shadows and a light Green for the highlights.

So let's get back into Lightroom now and choose that Greenish color.

It's not too dark… this is for the highlights.

And for the shadows I will choose a light red also.

If the saturation doesn't feel so right, you can adjust the sliders like I do now by

setting a new value because remember, you don't need to over due the color grading.

The final look should be very soft, very delicate.

I can also use this balance slider if I want to push this toning more to the green part

so I will set it to 20.

Let's choose some values in the Camera Calibration Tab.

I want to cool down the dark floor and the shadows so I'm gonna grab the Blue Primary

Hue slider, drag it to the left to .. let's say -40 or so and push the saturation to the maximum.

Keep in mind that these settings cannot be the same for your image, so you'll have

to deal with these values on your own and see what works for you.

Ok, I think it's time to crop my image.

If I want that film look I need to go at least with a 16:9 ratio, so I'm gonna choose the

crop tool and from the aspect ratio I'm gonna choose 16:9.

I'm gonna try to respect the rule of thirds and keep her face on this line, making sure

also to have a point of interest somewhere near this line, in my case the lifting bar.

I will add some contrast to the image, something like that.

And now I will come down to the Tone Curve and on the RGB channel, I create a point here

in the shadows area.

Then I start pushing this point upwards to create this very popular matte effect by crushing the blacks.

I think I can increase the exposure just a bit to a 0.5 for example.

So let's have a look at a before and after.

You can hit the backslash on the keyboard to switch between the before and after and you can also press

on this icon right here to have the before and after side by side.

This way you can see the huge difference between the original and the edited version.

It looks awesome!

We're here at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa.

And we're here at the Painted Sky Salon.

And we're going to go over a new, edgier look...

for when you're feeling wild or crazy.

[chuckle]

Me and Emma call it...

The Wraparound Mohawk.

But you're not going to have to shave your head for this one.

We're going to use a detangling brush,

a fine-tooth comb,

and then, just get a series of small elastics.

You'll need about 10 for this, depending on the length of her hair.

If it's very short, you probably need about five.

-Exactly. -Yeah.

[chuckle]

So, we started already brushing her hair straight back.

And then, you're going to grab your fine-tooth comb.

You're going to start by grabbing a small section of hair.

And we're just going to put an elastic in place.

How you feeling, Em?

-Good. -Good.

And now we're going to grab the second section.

When you get the first few sections in, it just kind of flows together.

You'll understand what's going on.

Alright.

I use the fine-tooth comb in between, just to keep things smooth.

We got the second section done.

Super simple, right?

Now, the very next step, what you're going to do,

you're going to take the first section of hair, let's comb it back,

and then we're going to split it into two, just like this, okay?

And now you're going to take the first section and pull it forward.

You can just have your daughter hold it, just like that.

Now brush it together.

Now, the reason it's called the Wraparound Mohawk braid,

is because you're taking the sections and you're wrapping them around each other

until you go all the way back.

And be gentle against the scalp.

We're going to comb this back.

We're going to throw in another elastic.

I like to do a little bit bigger sections

because you still get the detail without taking so much time.

You do have time to look cool, right Emms?

Yup, we do.

[chuckle]

Now we're going to grab the remaining hair.

You're just going to take these sections.

I hold this up.

You see that? I grab it.

And throw the elastic right around there.

Once you get it down to this point right here,

you can come up and you want to start pinching these out.

Now with this, when you get down to the end where it's just basically the tail,

you're just going to wrap these sections around, split it into two like that...

and then put an elastic in place.

And to finalize things, guys, I like to have it wrapped around,

but then altogether on the bottom.

So with the final elastic, just put it in place

and then from here, just pinch them out.

Walk your way up.

And when you're all done, it looks pretty cool, right?

Solar Warden.

Solar Warden is a hyperspace-faring race of human beings who utilize cloning and holographic

genetic recording/storage in order to protect their race and protect the Earth in this current

situation where there are more than one factions using this technology.

Turning our cookie cutter house into a unique home (1) - Duration: 6:09.

We prepared the areas for painting, this means covering the kitchen cabinets,

the counters, removing the light fixtures, fire alarms, electrical outlets, etc.

Kevin also removed the stools of all the windows that we're going to re –trim.

He used a utility knife and cut the caulking around the stool.

Don't through away the stool you removed, we're going to use them as templates to cut a new stools

We primed the walls, I know a lot of people skip this step, but I think it helps a lot to get good results.

We painted the ceiling with SW white flat.

We used Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray to paint the walls.

We are going to do boards and battens in this area,

but for the moment we're only placing the boards leaving the battens for after we change the floor.

Use a nail gun to place the new stools.

It's starting to look like I wanted.

Trimming this window took almost whole day. Keep in mind we are pretty new to these home improvement projects.

I argued a lot with kevin about painting the board for trimming the windows before placing them.

At the end I lost the battle but I think it's better to paint them before placing them.

Be aware, crown molding is a pain. But practice makes perfect.

These are the board sizes we used for this window.

The windows in the living room where easier to trim.

We painted the trims with SW white semi-gloss.

Kevin installed can lights and patch the hole from the old fluorescent light.

All this work took us about 10 days, we also painted some walls on the 2 floor.

We are turning our cookie cutter house into a unique home.

Follow us on our journey as we still have more projects to do,

like changing the floors, update the fireplace, framing the kitchen island and backsplash, etc.

but we don't want to stress; Rome wasn't build in a day neither our home.

All this work in this makeover was done by my husband and I.
