Hello, I'm Luke Margolis.
Welcome back to AtlantiCast.
As we enter the summer season and you prepare to enjoy
the sunshine, remember to protect your skin
from the sun's rays.
Here are some important tips to remember from Atlantic
Health System's chief medical and academic officer,
senior vice president Dr. Jan Schwarz-Miller.
First, if possible, avoid the sun entirely
during the mid-day hours when the sun is at its strongest.
Infants should always be kept out of direct sunlight.
Don't be fooled into thinking the shade can protect you.
Instead, wear long-sleeved clothing and broad-brimmed hats.
Sunscreen is a must-have.
Use an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours.
Plus, get one that protects against UVA and UVB radiation.
Put on sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside
so you can absorb it, and throw away expired sunscreen.
If you're looking for more sunscreen tips,
be sure to catch up with our Atlantic Health System
Community Health teams when they visit a neighborhood
near you throughout the summer.
You can find a list of those events at atlanticast.org.
Overlook Medical Center is the only hospital in New Jersey
to participate in a new clinical trial
into a form of stroke.
It's called the MIND Study of Artemis's
minimally invasive neuro-evacuation device.
The device is inserted into the affected parts of the brain
and suctions out a clot through a catheter-like device.
According to Dr. Paul Saphier,
endovascular neurosurgeon at Overlook Medical Center's
Atlantic Neuroscience Institute, quote,
"Our interventionalist team has performed about 60
of these procedures using the Artemis device
over a two-year period, and they've seen an increase
in survival rate with the device pre-trial."
Atlantic Health System was proud to celebrate
the dozens of investigators and researchers
who are helping advance health care every day
during the recent Clinical Trials Day.
Thank you to all of our team members helping to drive
innovation and discovery in medicine.
Dr. Barbara Minkowitz, chief of the pediatric orthopedic
service for Morristown Medical Center, recently presented
"The Answer Is Vitamin D: From Pediatrics
to Geriatrics in Orthopedics" on behalf
of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
The course explored the role of Vitamin D
in acquiring and maintaining optimal bone health.
To learn more, you can visit atlanticast.org as well.
Well, speaking of clinical trials, we have exciting new
advancements to announce in the fight against brain cancer.
The Toca regimen, a new immunotherapy treatment
for patients with brain cancer,
has advanced to a Phase 3 study.
Overlook Medical Center's
Gerald J. Glasser Brain Tumor Center is one of 68 sites
across the world participating.
The trial is examining the use of Toca 5 to stimulate
the body's immune system to fight brain cancer.
You can see the latest information
on this study at atlanticast.org as well.
May was National Mental Health Month,
and in honor of that important work, Atlantic Health System
was proud to take part in several events to raise awareness,
including a forum at Newton Medical Center
featuring professionals, mental health providers,
parents, and law enforcement officials.
Among the speakers was Annelise Malgieri,
a contestant in the Miss New Jersey pageant.
She was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
while she was in high school, and Chilton Medical Center
helped create the No Whispers campaign
to help end the stigma surrounding mental health.
Chilton hosted a variety of community-focused events
and activities to encourage awareness and discussion
about depression and suicide.
Those efforts are gonna continue throughout the year.
Now, if you believe someone you know is struggling
with a mental health issue, go to atlanticast.org,
and you can see the resources available
through Atlantic Behavioral Health.
Atlantic Health System wants to thank all the members
of the Newton and Hackettstown communities for showing
their support for Newton and Hackettstown medical centers.
The recent Evening of Wine and Roses event
will help raise, rather advance, the already high-quality
service available to patients at those facilities.
And the Chilton Wine Event from the Preakness Hills
Country Club in Wayne was a huge success.
Thank you to all of the sponsors who joined in the effort
to help us continue on our mission
of building healthier communities.
All right, as we go to a quick break,
it's time for me to share the stage
with some true viral video stars.
- [Elissar] Playing on the playground, soccer
with our friends, and on a team, swimming at the YMCA.
- You're watching the winner
of the very first AtlantiCast Collab Challenge.
Congratulations to 14-year-old Elissar Jaoudy
and her entire family for sharing this awesome collab video
showing her favorite health act.
You can see the entire video, along with all the other
amazing Collab Challenge submissions, at atlanticast.org.
