Hey guys gabe.video here and today we're going to talk about what a
producer actually does.
a lot of people know what a director does they're the person that oversees
the creative vision of the film and make sure that it's executed upon the best
way to sum up what a producer does a producer turns the lights on and the
lights off on a project so they're the ones that are there in the beginning and
take it all the way to the end no matter what that and maybe generally in film
the producers role in pre-production is to find the material for the project or
maybe even write it themselves if there is a script they get it into a good
enough position to either attach the director or they give back notes until
it is in that and in a good shape producers attach financing to the film
that means they're bringing the money to it so whether that's from a studio or
independent financier if it's being made for studio you don't really need it to
bring the money because the studio is financing but often for independent
projects they are the ones that are handling the financing body big part of
pre-production for a producer is to find that director and to make sure that
their vision aligns with what the producer saw as their vision so I mean
right here is a good example of a big distinction the producer has made some
top-level choices for the creative and that top-level choice is actually
finding the director and hiring them and then working with them along inside to
better the script and to work in a production make sure that a vision is
kind of maintained across the entire project
looosers determined the location that some will be shot the budgets the budget
level they help hire the cinematographer and the rest of the crew lastly they
develop a schedule for the production and a detailed plan to how the film will
be produced this is very important because if you don't have a plan then
the budget can spiral out of control so this is one of the most important
producer functions is to come up with that plan
and let the creative team and the crew live within those parameters that you
set the majority the producers work is done during the pre-production and
post-production phase but during production they make sure that
everything is running know that all the locations that
everything is paid for and they often look at the dailies with the directors
just as can make sure that the quality is there they just want to make sure and
see what the product is as it's coming along the producers at this stage also
use their grit in their know how to solve problems creatively and and this
is a major distinction between evolution of directors well is a director will
come up with a different creative ideas but sometimes those ideas are limited by
budget location etc so the producer will come in and work with the director and
the parameters they have and maybe offer some creative solutions up to their
problems and it's not it's not to come in and mandate type thing but it's let's
work together and find this out creatively during post-production the
producer often looks at different cuts of the film with the director give us
some feedback maybe works with the director and and suggests some scene
changes generally it's the director's job to kind of oversee this process but
they produce usually plays a big role and working with the director
hand-in-hand into space because they've been attached the project from the very
beginning they know the the story they know what the vision is and it's
somebody that that director can bounce ideas off of and and hopefully work
together in a cohesive manner also in this phase the producer works with the
distributor making sure that the marketing is lined up and they and they
help and oversee them the aspects of the distribution of the film there are many
different types of producers for the different types of content but I just
explained what's the generalization of a film producer the best way to really see
what different producers do at different levels for different types of projects
is to go on the PGA's website that's the producers guild of america and they have
a list of everything that each producer does so let's start with the executive
producer an executive producer is one that's usually supervises the production
and oversees other producers so that may be something that works at the studio if
it's a TV show it may be somebody that that both works at the network but then
also is the the writer or creator of the series an associate producer simple it's
a something that does a lot of the producers functions but does it
underneath a producer so they report to a another supervising producer the
producer of the project or maybe even the EP co-producer is either two or more
production companies or producers that come together for one cohesive unit so
they do this a lot for foreign films and foreign projects where they have
somebody from the US and from the other territory that worked on is simply
together as one unit like the title says it's co-producing so they're it's the
same level usually would report to a executive producer slightly higher at
either the studio or the network so depends on what you're working at or
what the actual content is but a supervising producer is one that
associate producers and other producers report to either on a show or if you're
working in digital content it may be something that kind of acts as like an
executive producer that they're overseeing like a Content protocol and
multiple producers are reporting but they kind of live under the same
umbrella a segment producer is more for TV and they produce tiny packages or
different segments of the show example this would be Shark Tank the normal show
is where they're actually the contestants are out there actually
pitching but a segment producer would lead the part where we go and we either
check in on the the past winners or losers that they're doing the Shark Tank
update on and we go to their location so it's off-site it's its own contained
thing so it needs its own producer coordinating producer is one that works
with two or more producers so they would be the one if there was a co-production
they would be the producer that kind of is the middleman in between making sure
that everything's coordinated and laid out right lastly is the wine producer
which I was one producer for years it's or the producer role that's onset and is
down to the nitty gritty they're the ones that are kind of overseeing
production they they're better at setting budgets and a lot of line
producers literally just write the budgets for films hand it over to the
production seems to live within an answer question
today they kind of go as they go back the other ones doing a lot of the heavy
lifting they're not really making a creative decisions and on some
productions the line producer kind of crosses over with the upm which need a
production manager which will do a whole nother video on that someday alright
guys that's it for today I hope this video is helpful I know that the role of
producer is usually confusing so I hope this helped kind of set what a producer
does if you have more questions or disagree with something I said go ahead
