What is the Internet?
And how does it work?
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks...
connecting millions of devices.
It's a decentralized network...
which is governed by a set of rules called the Internet protocol.
The connectivity is established worldwide...
at three different levels known as tiers.
The backbone of the Internet, known as tier 1 networks,
is formed by fibre optic cables or submarine cables...
that have been laid by large telecommunication companies...
which exchange data directly with each other through peering agreements.
Tier 2 and tier 3 networks purchase Internet transit...
from tier 1 networks to make it available to users downstream.
Users typically access the Internet through copper wires,
cables,
optical fibres,
Wi-Fi,
satellite...
or cellular telephone technology.
Every device connected to the Internet has its own unique address.
When a message is transferred from one device to another,
it is broken down into smaller packets of data.
These packets can take several different paths,
guided by routers,
until they reach the receiving device...
where they are reassembled in their original order...
according to the Internet protocol.
The sheer amount of data that travels across the Internet...
every single day is mind boggling.
And it will keep on growing as more people join in.
The Internet has already revolutionized the world,
but there's no doubt that it will continue to impact our lives...
