You're a college student, so we know you understand deadlines, but do you know how
to plan for deadlines at work? How do you ensure you complete your tutor reports
on time? What about any workshops or special
projects you're working on? How about clocking in and out an HR connect? Figure
out what works best for you and stick to it.
Punctuality means showing up for work, meetings, and events on time and prepared.
Showing up for work late indicates that you don't care about your job, so "on time"
generally means arriving at least five minutes early so that you are already
prepared when your shift starts.
Prioritizing means knowing how to finish the most important tasks first. Ensure
that you are finishing your appointments on time, completing your tutor reports,
and logging time in HR Connect. Prioritizing is also key in tutoring
because you must ensure that clients know the basics before moving on to more
difficult information. Sometimes arguments in the workplace are
unavoidable, but there are several strategies you can use to ensure that
they don't escalate. Remember to stay calm,
listen to understand instead of to respond, avoid blaming the other person,
and celebrate any agreements you reach.
Taking initiative at work requires that you go above and beyond. Think like a
team member and not just an employee when it comes to questions or problem-solving.
Share your ideas. Always be prepared for your shift, for meetings, and
for events. Be creative and ask lots of questions. Maybe you're having a
difficult semester or the workshop you're creating just isn't coming
together the way you wanted it to. Staying positive, being creative and
adaptable, and developing consistent habits can help you achieve your goals.
You should get in the habit of checking your CSU email account daily for
work-related messages. Oftentimes, the director or admin staff will send
time-sensitive information which tutors and peer leaders will find pertinent for
their daily tasks and duties. Teamwork is vital for any job but especially in the
ACT. Be sure to get to know your team members and other co-workers, ask them
for help or offer help and guidance to them, and pick up the slack when things
get busy around the center. Picking up trash and taking clients to their tutor
seems insignificant, but it's actually a huge help! It's been said that people
hear your words but they feel your attitude. Try to leave negative attitudes
at the door when you come to work and be sure to convey a positive, friendly
attitude when working with clients, especially new ones, as they may be
nervous about receiving tutoring.
As I'm sure you know, email is very important in the ACT. When sending an
email to the director or admin staff, have a clear subject line and use a
professional salutation, such as their name or "Dear so-and-so." Be sure to state
what the email is about and avoid the use of uncommon abbreviations. Though you
may be comfortable using profanity, your clients or coworkers may not, so please
be considerate and avoid it's use while at work.
Also, remember to speak respectfully to the director and administrative staff at
all times. Good customer service always begins with a smile, so remember to be
friendly and courteous. Try to help clients as soon as possible and really
listen to their questions or concerns. If you're confused, try repeating their
problem back to them for clarification. And if you can't solve their problem,
find someone who can. We hope you learned something new today that you can use in
this job and in your future career
